So as most of you know, I collect eye appealing au 58's. I ran acrossed this auction.

It really is a tiny gamble, 7 day return, but I am hoping it will be a good looking coin.

O well, hopefully I don't crap out. We will see soon.

Not a comment on the coin itself, but the seller managed to get the label in focus but couldn't manage to get the coin in the same photo in focus. It almost appears as if he used a blur tool to hide the coin.

I agree on the "selective" blur comment. But ONLY coin in hand will tell.

I'm certainly no camera expert...by a long shot... yet based on what I've heard from some folks regarding taking pics of (especially) small coins in NGC holders... getting the focus homed in on the coin rather than the surrounding holder can be difficult... if the focus homes in on the slab, the coin will be out of focus, as the coin is always set "down" in the hole...

I think he wasn't quite square to the face of the slab. Both PCGS and NGC try to get the label and the coin at the same height so they come in to focus at the same time. --Jerry

Often, small coins are tilted inside the foam insert, which makes focusing a challenge. Hope it works out!

A roll of the dice would've been bidding on that coin raw with those photos. Since it's graded by NGC, I don't think there is much downside.

I think you're going to be pleased when it arrives.
My reading of the photo/scan shows a pretty coin with what appears to be light pastel patina.

This is common with some cameras, they are really computers and zero in on a spot to focus. I had this problem with past cameras. The new camera I bought actually can focus on more then one area and shows me in a green box on the screen before I take the picture. With practice I can have the camera focus on one area , keep the button 1/2 way down and then reframe the shot. Then the area in focus is the area I want focused not what the sensors think should be. I always try and shoot the coin and the label seperate. Its less confusing for the sensors in the cameras.

For the photography comments, also remember that a whole slab will likely light much more easily, and the shutter speed will thus be faster. If the picture was hand-held, the faster shutter is crucial to reduce blur.

I think the coin will come out ok, but I'm not sure I like the buying method. I can see returning a coin that doesn't match semi-decent pictures, but in this case, some of the appeal is that the price will be limited because of the pictures. If the coin matches the description, even if not everything you hoped (but couldn't confirm) it would be, you should keep it.

These images look like they were produced on a scanner and many folks have focus problems with coins in slabs when using a scanner.
