What do you think about this 1807 capped bust half dollar?

Looks free of any scratches/damage to me, and I see it as about a VF20. But I'm not sure with the color on the obverse. Any thoughts about the grade/surfaces?

I think it might have been cleaned a very long time ago, but has since retoned. I like the circ cameo look too... I'd say F15 details??

Yes I was also thinking F15 or mayybe VF20 details, as well.

Looking at the hair above the eye, the stars, and the bird's feet, I think VF20 or so, with a light strike being the confounder. But I am certainly no expert. I like the look of that one.

Yea, normally I would have said Fine, but the last 1807 I had was a PCGS F12 with maybe 5% of the feathers still showing and a fair amount less detail on the obv drapery and such. The weak strikes can be a bit of a puzzle at times to me.

Nice looking 1807, I would go VF30 without a problem...

The strike is a little soft on the reverse...

Not original skin but nothing offensive IMO. Looks like she's had plenty of time to retone. Strike weakness complicates but I venture VF25.

I've been wrong before, but this coin shouldn't grade higher than a 15 even with the weak strike, and I would not be surprised to see it in a 12.
Those of you saying 25 and 30, you need A LOT more meat on the obverse, and a tad more on the reverse.
The stars need to be more distinct to reach VF in my opinion, but they could be better defined and the picture could be the issue here.

Therefore, this coin could grade anywhere between F-12 and VF-20; no higher or lower!

Judging by the fields and high areas, there is not a not of chatter or friction marks,
so doesn't look like she had an awful lot of circulation time.

I would have to call her PCGS 30 or 35, and any other TPG 40

Ok, those of you saying higher than a VF-20 need to see two examples that I have personally owned which
graded (NGC) VF-30 and (PCGS) VF-35 respectively; different DM's, but just as equal in terms of strike characteristics.

    OP's example (sized down)

    PCGS-15 (added by the OP)

    PCGS-25 (as per Denver Dave)

Ah, OK. So, here are so more comparison pics (that VF25 most certain appears a weak strike):

  • That F15 looks "flat" where your original coin looks "rounded"...

Almost like it was stored and then put back out for a short time...

I guess it's all about the strike or lack of...

I like the coin just fine. My grading skills on lower grade 1807 CBHs are not very good, but I would think VF20 on this one. What PCGS says on such a coin is certainly not conclusive.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
