the 2000 Library of Congress bimetallic coin

Has this coin seen a dramatic value change recently?

The last I looked it was trending down.

Depends on what you mean by 'recently'. In '08 and early into '09 the more valuable unc. version was trending down pretty hard, and was even obtainable for around $2000 for a brief period of time. Since July or Aug. '09, however, it has seen a strong resurgance, more than doubling. Now bid @ $5K in latest Greysheet. I'm not sure what sort of market manipulation and/or forces led to the hard pullback and subsequent rapid recovery. All I know is I wish I had one right now as they seem pretty hot.

There is one dealer who has been buying them fairly consistently over the last two years. With those mintages it is not beyond the ability of some individuals. Last I heard he owned a significant majority of them.

I had my eye on those, too. Beautiful coins. Sure does sound like some manipulation, though, if prices have risen so dramatically lately.

Are you saying you purchase 2000 LOC PROOF $10 commems for $160? I'll buy as many as I can find at that price, that's below melt.

I find that hard to believe, I think you meant $1,600.

I'm glad I got one when I did!

Could this be the most expensive modern coin?

The only thing the coin has going for it is
    a low mintage.JMA.

Are there other platinum and gold coins?

These low mintage gold modern commems are very undervalued.

There are many uncirculated gold and platinum coins with lower mintages and *much* lower prices than the uncirculated LOC. These include the 1997-W Jackie Robinson $5, 2001 Capitol Visitors Center $5, and *all* of the 2006-2008-W burnished uncirculated Platinum Eagles in all denominations.

The 2008-W Van Buren's Liberty (non)Spouse $10 gold, with the Liberty Seated design on the obverse, has a reported mintage of 4334 in uncirculated, and recent sales for less than $1000.

  • Supply and demand determine price, not supply alone. The Van Buren Liberty just recently ended its run and I don't see how two weeks is enough time to establish a value. We may have to wait until the end of the First Spouse series for the coins in the series to establish their relative market values.

The Van Buren's Liberty is also part of the 4-coin "Liberty" subset of the spouse coins, featuring obverse designs from the 18th and 19th centuries. This subset will be completed in 2010. It is likely to be more popular with collectors than the First Spouse series as a whole.
