AArgh - auction catalogs and a flooded basement.

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,464 ✭✭✭✭✭
Came home from Xmas shopping to a funny sound in the basement. It's been unusually cold. A frozen pipe finally thawed, flooding the basement.

Fortunately only one box of catalogs got soaked - but they were some of my favorites from the 90's. image

The inside wall where the pipe is has a built in cabinet, so I tore off the outside siding/sheathing to get to the pipe - I know how to side a house but cabinetry/finish work is beyond me. image

That's the problem with older auction catalogs, new ones keep being stacked on top image

Sorry about the flooded basement, I've been through my fair share as well image

Flooded Basements suck! Unless if you are like 5 and think it's a great time to get on your swimsuit! image Dad wasn't to happy when I showed up in floaties instead of with a mop and bucket LMAO
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

Dude! Sorry to hear that image

I see the news with all the frozen/burst lines. I know it's cold out but can't believe that some of them are freezing still.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Wow, that's a bummer Lakesammman.
I've already unthawed six friends/family members' pipes this week.
This California plumbing doesn't work too good in subfreezing weather.

    I hate homeowner emergencies. image

Look on the bright side. This might the excuse that you needed to get rid of all of those catalogs that you never look at anyway. image

Being one of the many fine collectors I've sort of come to know over the years on the boards, and someone who has
great taste for my favorite American issues (specifically; territorial gold), I'll just offer my condolences on the loss of the catalogues and to any other losses you may have sustained.

That stinks. Call Bryce for replacements.

A nephew of mine lost most of his baseball card collection that way. What were once individual cards lined up in a box turned into long cardboard bricks. And here's a warning to those who think it's a fun idea to go wading in a water filled basement that may be wired for outlets and sump pumps and furnaces and other electrical appliances, it's not a very wise thing to do.

You could turn those catalogs into Paper Mache Art imageimage

Seriously... Sorry to hear of your loss.

Please make a list of what you need to replace.

I got rid of the ones that can be easily accessed on line and/or had nothing of interest for me. These were the GOOD ones. image

Went to the hardware store last night for some plumbing parts - they said I was the 31st person with a burst pipe story that day. image Can't wait until the REST of the pipes thaw today. image

Best of luck Lakes. I miss having a basement. image

On the bright side, I've got an "off permit" plumbing job for you when you come down.

Nic, happy to help out, if I can get the plumbers torch through airport security. image

Today it was the rental! Had to race home from work to fix another leak - a friction fitting behind the dishwasher came apart, of all things. Glad the tenant was home, O/W it would have been a VERY big mess.

  • Fortunately, catalogues from the 1990s are available from the lit dealers and can be replaced fairly easily.

It's the older ones that need a safe resting spot on the bookshelf.

That is too bad to hear. I hate when things like that happen. image

Longacre sacked his oil man when the estate did not have heat one morning. It ended up being a frozen pipe in the air handler in the attic. The oil guy took it upon himself to lecture yours truly and make Longacre feel like a fool for "letting" this happen. I told the guy to go pound sand and I hired another company to fix the problem and they also got all of the oil/heating/AC work for the entire compound.
