Confusing ANACS holder - Is this a problem free coin designation, or not?

Typically when a coin has a problem, they're labeled as "VF20 details" but this one lacks that plus further confounding is the language "obv. planchet scratch" (as opposed to what other type of scratch?) Does this indicate a problem free coin in the sense that PCGS would grade it because the damage was caused at the mint or is this just a good old fashioned post minting damage?

    Problem coin.
I can see why you would hesitate though.

Do collectors still use the new ANACS?

  • I would say this is mint damage. The planchet had a scratch before the coin was struck, so I would say that it is not a details coin.

Dunno. The old white ANACS holders are my all time fav. though.

ANACS confusing insert aside, I don't think this one had a pre-struck planchet scratch but rather a scratch damaging the coin after it was struck.

(And yes, I too love the older small white ANACS coins.)

Collectors that want Variety attributions do since ANACS will recognize that which PCGS and NGC refuse to.

PCGS has absolutely no interest in attibuting or slabbing my Prototype IKE.

I've seen eary coins with worse damage that were graded by PCGS and NGC.
