some pics have glare because i couldnt get the color to show head on so i tilted the coin towards the light source.

I used two of these on both sides of the lens.

Glare is not diffused lighting. Glare is a light to close to a slab.

These are still somewhat washed out, play around with your light location some more.

the only ones i had trouble with were the DMPLs and the proofs. I am going to try Axial lighting with the proof and dmpls tomorrow.

Many are a little overexposed also.

  • Try raising the lights a bit higher (put something under the base of the ott lights). That way your coins will not look 'washed out', but you're on the right track!

    care to elaborate?

Many are a little too bright. The colors will look better with a little darker picture. A small downward bump in the exposure compensation will easily do the trick (don't know what camera you are using).

trying that now, what would be a good Iso to run? 500 due to the bright lights?
  • wow thanks, i get what your saying about it being washed out looking.

I set my iso to basically the lowest it will go and just leave it. There will be very few times where you would need to adjust it as you go.

Those lights are not bright. 100 or 200 would work fine.

  • No, just use 100 or 200 depending on your brand or type of camera. Put the camera in manual and set the aperture between 8-11 depending on your lens. Trying playing around with a shutter between 200-400 depending on the manual settings of your camera. And, if you have Photoshop or something like it, just play around with the exposure settings and see what you can come up with.

i use the same lights with the side of a translucent milk jug taped over it to diffuse some light. i think your pics are more sharp than mine. again really nice coins.

  • I really enjoying seeing the evolution of these shots. Good going.

I've been wanting to get a new camera and lighting for some time now, but a new Walker always seems to interfere.

Great improvement in the photos, and it doesn’t hurt to have nice coins to shoot.

What a difference it makes when the lighting is positioned just right to show a little 3D in the details of the coin. Very nice! What has taken years for some to learn, you have mastered in 6 hours. image

    Good job!
