So....what does all this hubbub about RD copper do for OGH's?

Seems to me its a double edge sword, with the gurantee and all, but in the long run RD copper in the OGH must have just increased in desirability. Thoughts?

well i just bought a piece of RD copper in an OGH this week:

It was high on my wish list so I figured I might as well get one before 1/1/2010 so that the guarantee will still apply for as long as I own it. Also figured OGH was the way to go to help reassure the next owner of the coin who apparently will not have a guarantee, though I plan to own it for a very long time image

About time you got a nice 1909-S IHC for your registry set image. How much more you want to do with it? Are there coins you still want to upgrade?

Time will tell if the market treats all rd copper the same or not, for me I might be willing to pay a slight prem for rattlers and ogh coins. But there are two problems, one is that most of these have been picked over already so whats left are just ok or doggie for the grade. Second I suspect that you will see the doctors begin to apply their magic to coins in these old holders, much like we saw done by a forum member to morgans a few years back. image

i think this will be a flash in the pan to be honest.
gold collectors already went through this with puttied gold coins and
nothing has changed when it comes to old holders. people still pay
up for newer holders... older holders only influence how people think
grade wise and rarely surface stability wise.

My sense is any premium for the OGH effect will be canceled out by the negative effect of the lack of a color guarantee.

Agree. Taking away the guarantee has to hurt the desirability of that product to some extent and I imagine the demand for RD copper will diminish somewhat as a result.

I believe that red copper in older holders can be said to be geniune red pieces and not doctored.
Or they would have turned by now.

Disagree. In lieu of the guarantee, collectors will rely on the fact that the coins in the rattlers and OGHs have been stable for 14-23 years.

So you're saying there was no value in the guarantee?

I certainly can't speak for anyone but myself, but for me that statement couldn't be more incorrect.

No, the guarantee had value and I'm quite angry. I was disagreeing with the comment that the OGH premium will go away without the guarantee. It still has added value IMHO because of the color stability it has illustrated. I think the call on the guarantys came up mostly on the newer slabs anyway.
