1) PCGS announces that slabbed RD/RB copper graded (or sold) after 1/1/2010 no longer have a RD/RB guarantee. (also, other sorts of changes announced effective 1/1/2010)
2) One cannot tell from looking at a slab label when it was graded. There are only a few generations of slabs; none are specifically dated.
Putting the two together:
Does this imply that on 1/1/2010, we can expect a new kind of slab?
If so, cool!
I suppose they could just change the label. Sigh.
Something to wonder about. Perhaps PCGS has a christmas present for us?

After all, if the coin's for sale after 1/1 it has no guarantee.
If there's an announcement to be made, I would expect it to be with the goal of increasing PCGS's revenue, not increasing their costs.

It seems kind of inevitable.
A reasonable guess, but not near the earth shattering impact that Mr Hall has implied.
I suspect a new slab, but one that deters the much larger liability/revenue draining issues facing PCGS. That's counterfeit coins/slabs.
This will also justify the steep price increase they're planning on their grading fees.

Dont worry the scratch resistant NGC holders are a joke and seem worse than the old ones.

I don't know if it's true or not but I have been asking for the edge view slab for my collection for a long time. I'm hoping that they at least announce that it is opened up to all coins and not just the cheap modern prez dollars. Not sure why they get the fancy slab and my relatively expensive classics get a cheap rubber gasket.
What would be better would be a completely new slab to throw off the counterfeiters and I would love it if they licensed the segs labeling system to get info on the top of the slab.

About a year or so ago, DH said they were working on a way to grade GSA's in the slab. Perhaps they figured
out how to do it (could have copied NGC years ago).

pcgs should have the date the coin was slabbed as well as a new three prong slab in order to see more of the coin.

I purchased the scratch resistant coating for my eyeglasses, little good it did, wasn't worth the money.
On the other hand as long as the holder prevents the coin from being scratched there is value in that.

Not true. They stand behind coins that were graded before 1/1/10, unless the coin changes hands after that date. The only question I have is if the burden of proof with respect to the date of purchase is on the coin's owner or on PCGS.
And there's no need for a new holder. If the coin was slabbed post 12/31/09, PCGS can prove it and avoid liability. And prospective buyers have no need to know the date of encapsulation because the very act of purchasing the coin would void any guaranty that might have existed.

In addition to standing behind the pre 1/1/10 coins as long as ownership doesn't change, it seems to me that PCGS is still guaranteeing the grade of all copper coins, even post 1/1/10. They are just no longer guaranteeing the color of the copper. Not sure if that reading of their release is accurate, nor am I sure how such a policy will work in practice when copper grades are sometimes dependent on the color.

No as long as you remain the owner you can resubmit for any of the services without losing the guarantee, its when the coin changes hands that it goes poof.
