BBCE...Neither wind, nor rain, nor sleet..........Rice Rookie Hit!

could stop me from taking the drive down to BBCE this afternoon. Bought a box of 93-94 Finest BKB (nothin good), as well as 3 packs of 84, and 3 packs of 86 FB. I wanted a Marino or Rice, GOT THEM BOTH!!! However the Marino was an 86.image Here is a scan of the Rice.....shot at 10?

The white background doesn't allow any white touches to the corners to be seen (if there are any). A darker background will allow a better idea of the corners. Centering seems darn good.

Let me find something to scan it against.

Turn the light off in the room, and leave the scanner lid up.

Only an idiot would have a message board signature.
  • Ok, there is the black background. Centering appears to be perfect 50/50 both ways. Im not much of a card grader, but the look of this card floored me more than actually pulling a Rice!

I agree. Looks to me like a lock PSA 9, with the top two corners showing tiny touches. Congrats on a $200 card in PSA 9.
  • Rice is a little tilty

    Great Pull!

Edges look a lil flaky and the smallest corners touches

for a 10 there might be an outside chance

    9 bid for sure congrats

I'm sure the size of the scan makes the imperfections look worse then they actually are.

With that said, the card could 8 as well as 9 depending on what it looks like in hand.

Getting a 10 is generally luck of the draw.

    Good for you.

I'm glad I don't live near BBCE, for the same reason I'm glad I don't live near a casino.
  • Thanks for all the replies fellas. I have never subbed a card before. Do I need to have some kind of membership, or can I just send it in with payment?

Sweet looking card gecko, congrats on the pull.

You need to join or have someone send it in for you.

    Good luck on the grade.

You need to be a member like the coin side.

You do get some free subs with the paid membership.

They have a few plans (they just changed them) from silver to platinum.

Click the PSA link at the top right and there you will find all the info you need.

    Steve

this is the one you probably could use:

    GOLD MEMBERSHIP (1 Year) $110

    * Direct Submission Privileges to All PSA Grading Services for One Year
    * A voucher for 6 Submissions - 7 Business Day Turnaround (All 6 cards must be submitted at the same time. Maximum value per card allowed is $499 each.)
    * T3's, Autographed Tickets, and Autographed Cards* are not allowed on this voucher.
    * 1-Year Subscription to the Sports Market Report (SMR)
    * Collecting Sports Legends: The Ultimate Hobby Guide
    * 1-Year subscription to the PSA Population ReportSM and SMR Online
    * Electronic Version of the Sports Market Report**
    * Monthly Grading Specials

Join at the Gold Level ($110 US or $130 Int'l)

What's good about the 6 free is that you get them back (from the day you mail them) in about 3 weeks.

The Platinum used to be for 2 years and 12 vouchers but has now changed to 1 yr. and 15.

Only cards valued at 500.00 and below are elgible so it makes sense to send in only those cards and not 25.00 commons unless of course

you feel it will get a 10 (or 9) and be a low pop or so the theory goes.

The Rice is a good card to send in under the vouchers, do you have 5 more such cards?

    Steved
    Good for you.

That Rice is a BEAUTY! CONGRATS! However, I think the top left corner will keep it out of a "10" slab ... but that is one to sub ... and most likely will come back a "9".
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Ok, here is a very optimistic question for you 86 football experts........ The more I look at that top left corner, im starting to wonder something. It seems that the spacing between the white diagonals is such that the corner MAY be white not due to a touch, but rather the next white diagonal? Is this possible? I used a 10x coin loupe on it and just cannot tell if the corner is more white (stripe) or more grey (cardstock).

    Optimistic? Yes.

    Possible? Yes.

Man, it would be great to live within driving distance to BBCE. On the other hand I am probably saving a lot of money by living far away.image

Oh man, I would love it if they were within driving distance of my place. Actually, his street happens to run right through my town, but unfortunately it's the Lincoln Highway (Route 30) and it's still 350 miles away. image

Phil I don't thinks so because the white appears to be only on the top and not the sides.

But who knows? Send it in and we all will find out.

    Steve
    Good for you.

Wow, what a Blazer!!! Very nice pull. I think the white might be from the next white line. I would have to think that it is probably a 9. If the card was a common you would get a 10. Either way, I would love to have a 9 in my collection. Very nice hit, thats what keeps us ripin' more wax... That one big card that comes once in a blue moon.

nice hit. 86 football is a great deal.. in my opinion.. better than 84. there are 2 stud rookies.. and the Young is very low pop in psa 10.. plus there are several mid level rookies.. like white, bruce smith, andre reed, bernie kosar, boomer.. plus HOF like payton, montana, elway, marino.. not to mention a pretty cool design and tough borders that make Gem mint cards go for a nice premium... i'm a bit of a newbe.. but if anyone wanted to get a rip together for 86 topps i would def be in.

BBCE sells 1984 wax packs for $14 and 1986 wax packs for $12 (not a big difference), and have you ever heard of Marino, Elway, Dickerson, and Long?
  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,684 ✭✭✭
i'm well aware of marino and elway ect.. but they are somewhat common in a psa 9 or 10.. while there are only 3 psa 10 steve young rookies.. i know that the usfl rookie is his true rookie.. but some people collect only nfl.. i think at 12 bucks the 86 packs are a better value than 84.. i'm not saying that that 84 set isn't a great set.. it is.. i just think that if you are buying pack 86 is better value. plus you get the outside shot at hitting a tough to get psa 10
