Why all the complaints about Registered mail and USPS?

Sorry...but another POSITIVE pat on the back for the USPS and registered mail....

The only time I have had problems is when *I* screwed up the address and, even then, they helped out quickly and things were fine.
This time, I registered mailed a 2lb package (flat rate) of silver eagles. They went to the local PO the morning of 12/4.
I looked today and the status has been updated to "out for delivery". This is from West Coast to mid-US.
5 days, including a weekend.

I had an envelope, first class mail, with a coin in it, take 2+ weeks to get almost the same place (same state, different city (major city)).

So, I won't be one of those complaining about how long registered mail takes nor about the post office in general.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've always gotten good service from the employees at my post office which makes me feel fortunate.

Registered mail is inconsistent which I have allways blamed on the blowing winds of beaurocracy. Right now Registered seems to be fast. I recieved two packages from half way across the country in 3 days each--a record. However, I recieved an express mail package from all the way across the country in one day. Since I switched to express mail for outgoing medium value packages ($1k to $5k) a couple months ago I've had zero complaints and lots of easy shipments. --Jerry

Express mail is supposed to be like that.
For many items, particularly due to weight, I wouldn't try express mail, but would flat rate registered.

Registered, for me, has been pretty consistently 5-7 days, with the occassional outlier of ~9 days once or twice.

  • I sent a check to Charmy a couple of months ago that didn't arrive in a timely fashion, after a few weeks we gave up and I sent her a duplicate, the check finally showed up a few weeks later. That however, was about the first "bad" experience I have had with the USPS, that includes all my ebay sales. I have no complaints with their service. My local PO calls me in the morning if i have anything that needs my signature and asks me if if want them to bring it by or do I want to just come in and pick it up, albeit I live in a small town but how can you beat that!

Maybe it's just my karma, but Registered has consistently been S L O W for me the past 4 or 5 months. Last week I received one from the midwest that took exactly 15 days. A few months ago I had a submission take 3 weeks - from Newport beach to Escondido, CA, a grand total of about 70 miles!
  • Registered mail is secure. Never had an issue there.

But, from PCGS to the the S.E. US to my P.O. box runs 2+
weeks. Seldom is it under that and sometimes up to 3 weeks.

Always seems like the longest 2 weeks of my life.

Only $3-4 more to send a $1200 coin overnight express insured. I'm with Jerry, I have switched a lot of my shipments to express. However, I have shipped hundreds of coins registered and never had a problem. I just have to make it clear to my customers that registered is much slower.

Do you send 2+ pounds using expressmail? Honest question as I have only used expressmail once and that was for a UHR to MCM. Worked just great doing it and was quick and easy. No complaints about that service either, but for something that is a bit more in volume (size/weight particularly), I felt that registered would be the right thing to do (wasn't about cost of registered vs express)

I send most of my express packages in envelopes. However, 5 PCGS blue boxes will fit in an express mail or priority mail box. I once shipped 5 boxes of silver eagles (100 oz of silver plus all the plastic) in one of those boxes. IIRC, I taped it up pretty darn good with strapping tape. --jerry

My $3-4 more quote is for the cardboard flat rate express envelope. I usually put the coin inside a bubble envelope and the put the bubble envelope in the flat rate envelope. The flat rate envelope is limited in what will safely fit in it. Going rate for a $1200 coin insured is about $21 coast to coast.
