Since there's no ms66 in the poll I will pick ms65.

I don't see NGC and CAC getting it that wrong...??? image

If the photo is accurate, that's a gorgeous obverse, and I'll bet better in hand. Question is, what's the reverse look like?

You probably would have gotten considerably more meaningful and objective feedback, had you 1) included other/higher grade choices and 2) not shown the current grade. A reverse image would have helped, as well.

The above notwithstanding, and trying to be objective, I probably would have guessed MS66 non-star, based just on the obverse image provided.
  • Not only is grading coins from images just plain silly but grading coins from images with only half of the coin to grade is really really silly. image

Not deserving of a star at all IMO, looks like it may have been previous 65, though.

Looks like a print by the nose???
  • I wasn't really asking to know what you would grade the coin ..........

I was being brutally blunt in asking what you thought the coin was graded when it was in a PCGS slab ..

and I gave a big clue in giving MS 65 as the highest choice..........

I was not looking for feedback , I was trying to indirectly say :

"Holy SHEET ! Look what this ex PCGS MS#% coin got graded by NGC !"

Yeaaaaaaah, PP, what's the deal with only the obverse here? Neener, neener, what a weiner.

Given that the obverse looks quite nice, it's gotta' be the reverse that's holding it back, so I said 64 simply because it was there. '52-P's are surprisingly hard to find nicely toned. Tomaska thinks they are relatively easy, but I've got one in PCGS MS66FBL that I've been trying to upgrade for YEARS and have yet to see one with better toning, which is pretty shocking given that it's the toning part that I'm trying to upgrade (of course the coin must be a 66FBL too).

I figured that was what you were doing, but wanted to hear you admit it.image And you could have done it much more easily and efficiently than you did, without all the hoopla, etc.image

I've seen worse 67 frankies in PCGS holders; so, what's your point? Every grading service makes mistakes. PCGS and NGC usually get it close.image

what you should do daddy-o, is send that GEM to me, so I can access it properly, and possibly grant it the coveted 'HepKitty' seal of approval.

  • I called it a 65....not based on what I can see but just based on the fact that the coin was in a lower grade holder and it would be surprising for the coin to go up 3 or 4 points....2 points....possibly.

As I recall few coins ever graded higher than MS65 back in the rattler days.
After all a MS65 was a true gem investment grade coin back in the day.
When a 66 came in the store it was "wow" MS70 , perfection as in you
had to go to heaven to witness.

I digress... Nice 65 with thumb printimage

  • Was it a Heritage Auction? I can't find that coin in a PCGS OGH selling in 2009 FUN auction. I checked 2008 too.
And I checked the Summer FUN and Orlando FUN for both years, including the "Final Session."
    I did find this tho.....DEC 2009

All grading services make mistakes...in this case, I would not buy that coin at a 67* price....someone will!image
