I've been to the memorial on the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor. I cried.

The ship lies beneath the sea,
    still visible to those above.
It's soul bleeds out on the wave awash
O'er the memories of those we loved.

The day FDR declared that nothing less than ultimate VICTORY over Japan.

Victory: a word Mr. "Dithers" forgot to use at "W" last week.

  • A reminder to all in the military to remain dilligent and alert at their posts........

A little extra meaning for my family this year. We vacationed in Hawaii back in March while my daughter's high school band played concerts in the area, including one on at Pearl Harbor on the grounds of the visitor's center for USS Bowfin. Visited the memorial with the band, and the tour guide was sure to point out that many that died would have been their age. Moving and memorable.

This attack should be remember each year, but sadly as more people pass away that this was a contemporary event, the fewer numbers ponder what occurred.

The country as a whole no longer truly look back and recalls the horror of many battles of past conflicts, even those fought between the states themselves.

Perhaps in two years, on the 70th anniversary of the attack, the nation will give those survioring witnesses a greater acknowledgement which they are due.

I got engaged exactly 13 years ago today. I figured if it did not work out I had a great day for it. Pearl Harbor Day.

Luckily, and thru much work it has worked out great.

  • There's an article in our (small ) local newspaper today about a 86 year old survivor who is back for the first time since the attack. The anniversary is always noted and remembered here.

Even though (IMHO) there's not much left worth seeing on Oahu, - the Arizona Memorial is a must see, - must feel...

Dec 7 has a twofold meaning. First Pearl Harbor and second I was drafted on Dec 7 1967.

My dad, who is 88 this year, is a Pearl Harbor Survivor. He was 18, just joined the Navy, and at the time of the attack, he was working as a fireman standing by with hose and water while the ships were being refueled. His story is recounted in Walter Lord's book "Day of Infamy" as follows:

The following is written under a photo taken of the Shaw as it explodes: "Toward the end of the attack, the destroyer Shaw exploded in the floating drydock. Debris sailed through the air, and one five-inch shell arched half a mile across the channel, landing on Ford Island a few feet from where this picture was taken."

pg. 139: "Seaman Ed Waszkiewicz watched from the Ford Island seaplane ramp, nearly half a mile across the bay. At this distance, he knew he was at least safe - until he looked up at the sky. One of the Shaw's five-inch shells was tumbling end over end, arching directly at him. He dived behind a fire truck as the shell hit the concrete ramp several feet away. It didn't explode, merely bounced a hundred yards along the ramp and changed into one of the hangars."

  • When I was about to retire from the USAF, I was sent to Hawaii (Hickam AFB) for my retirement physical exam. While there, I went to the USS Bowfin display and out to the memorial. It was really something I wish all Americans could do. Very moving.

At Hickam AFB, which was also hit hard during the attacks, many of the buildings still have bullet holes/damage from the aerial assualt.

Calendars used to note this day as a memorial, but it seems many newer calendars seem to be missing any reference to Pearl Harbor. Not "politically correct" or just too distant in the past?

As a side note, George Madis, renowned Winchester expert/author and good friend of mine who passed away a few years back, told me his about his "disdain" for the Japanese was twofold. The attack, and the fact that they ruined his 10th birthday party. He was born 7 Dec 1931.

Good thing "Dithers" wasn't in charge then. There were a lot of tough decisions to be made to assure ultimate victory. Now it seems "they" can't decide anything, for fear of hurting someone's feelings. Sad. Sad. Sad.

Both of my parents had a Pearl Harbor connection. My dad was a Marine stationed at Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7. My mom was a high school student in Bethesda, MD. On December 7 she and a classmate went to the office of her friend's senator (Burton Wheeler of Montana), and they were given passes to the Senate chamber for the next day to see and hear FDR give his declaration of war, the "day of infamy" speech. I still have Mom's Senate pass for that day. A nice little piece of history.

My connection with 12-7-41 is that I was baptised on that day (I was 7 months old) and coincidently the Movie "Pearl Harbor" just happened to be released in theaters on May 25th 2001 my 50th birthday.

    But 2001 was 60 years, not 50.

My Uncle, Ken Roberts went down with the Arizona.
He was 19 at the time.

Being that I was born in 52 I never got the chance to know him
    except through pictures and relatives.
