Nice type coins are still being accumulated but verrryyyyy
quietly. Prices have moderated on these and there are no
posted increases for some time. It is always darkest before
the dawn. Shhhhhhhh, quiet as a mouse!

advertisers and clients. All issues from the past have been resolved
and both parties are moving ahead in a cooperative manner. This has
been a very good thing for the hobby as both PCGS and Legend play
very important roles in the present as well as the future of our hobby.

<< <i>Are they going PCGS exclusive on their site? I noticed they only have one NGC coin in their entire on-line inventory that's unsold or not on hold. Surely the announcement will be bigger that that. I do realize that they normally carry more PCGS then NGC...... They already have only CAC approved coins on their site. MJ >>
I highly doubt it. I've bought some really nice coins in NGC holders over the years. Having a policy of rejecting the holder without considering the coin is foolish - from both a collectors AND a dealer's perspective.

Cool.
Does this mean that CU is going to "UnBan" Laura so she can come here and post again?

her column, states her opinions and gets

Forum, she was very interesting, but a number

game of how much they could irritate her. That
negative attitude is what causes many dealers to
cease participation on our Forum. It is a shame and
a true loss for many of us.

The text in bold is incorrect. She is still banned under the name Legend, which is the name she posted under previously.

<< <i>It makes you wonder if the market for "ordinary", non-gold numismatic coins even exists. >>
The market for solid, choice and gem coins definitely exists. Although gold is the best seller now, gold coins by themselves cannot sustain an entire marketplace. Despite what the report says, gold wasn't selling in Houston as well as it has been at shows in the recent past.
Just because the market is in general passing over your head doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Start buying and selling coins daily and attend 40 coin shows per year and then perhaps your opinions regarding the coin market will carry more credibility.

Yes, one of whom has already posted here. Really - if he has nothing constructive to add why does he bother?
Subtle, but direct. I like it.
Well a $60 drop in the pog over 2 days has a way of doing that. No big surprise there. While generics may have dropped 3-5% by Friday they were still trading and in demand. That's a big change where typically the big boyz just stop buying altogether. Gold wholesalers are still calling potential sellers to fill large orders.

That seems a bit harsh. I don't attend 40 shows a year, I don't buy and sell coins daily (actually I buy frequently but rarely sell), but my opinion of the small esoteric market I play in may be valid none-the-less (and so may the posters although I don't know him). My view of what the poster was saying is that for a great many of us generic gold pricing has absolutely no meaning to the collectors market we buy in. And I happen to agree that gold pricing swings have zero relationship to the coins I buy.
I have no problems with the metals market, heck, many dealers could hardly make a living if they had to rely on just collectors. And I do speculate in precious metals on occasion, but I don't talk about it here.

<< <i>Laura can post here anytime she wants. Although my advice to her is that it is not worth the trouble. There are too many people on these boards that would love to have her as a target again. Eventually those people will be banned and she will come back.
Don, I realize you know more of the inner workings about PCGS than I do and you state that Laura may be able to post here anytime she wants, but her username of Legend is still banned. If you type in the username of a banned PCGS member you receive the following message-
<< <i>Login Denied, you are not authorized to login to the forums. >>
This is the message one receives if one attempts to login as Legend. This is not the same message that one receives if they attempt to login as a PCGS member who is not banned. She may be able to post here anytime she wants, but the Legend username is banned at this moment.

Don, you will be pleased to know that I renewed my PCGS Platinum Collector's Club membership at the show, and submitted my 8 coins included with the membership: One (1) $20 Liberty and Seven (7) $20 Saint Gaudens...
We Texas coin collectors really appreciate your participation at our local coin show. Thanks again!

Can't we all just get along? Nobody is perfect. We are all here for the love of numismatics.

<< <i>If all the business is done WHOLESALE, then where does it go? I never hear about retail sales, so are the dealers just buying this stuff for themselves? I dont understand how there can be a wholesale market without a retail end user. Eventually this game of "hot potato" will end, and it will end badly, just as it always does. >>
I think us collectors would welcome that, unless of course you are looking to sell in the near future.
Type is, and has always been, the backbone of the coin industry. It is being accumulated in up or down markets, any weakness in type only presents a buying opportunity.
As far as the guesstimate of 50% of all red copper over 100 yrs old being messed with is concerned, I think that number is way low. Personally I think it's closer to Ira's estimate of 99% as he
mentioned in another thread.
IF gold corrects in any major way (and I'm not sure that it will) a lot of people will be holding a ton of overpriced high pop generic gold. If you are in the generic market just to flip for a profit,
that's fine, but if your intention is to hold for any length of time I would be very wary buying at these levels. Some of the small denomination gold like the 2 1/2 Libs in low pop dates have
always looked undervalued to me, but there never has been enough of a (numismatic) collector base for these. Maybe someday that will change.

One show, and one dealer's report on it, does not a market make.....sounded like the Parsippany NJ show was strong for good ol' fashioned collector coins, like Barbers. And judging by the prices circ Barbers (and better Walkers) continue to bring on the the Bay, I don't think this is limited to the Northeast.

Well said, TDN.
Amazing, isn't it? People can rant and rave, but it always comes back to THE COIN and not the holder. Isn't that the essence of numismatics?

I for one would love to see her posting on here. It bothers me that some people see fit to bait her and that's a shame. I hear people say that she can be abrasive, opinionated, etc.
So what? She knows a tremendous amount about coins, has a great eye and knows her end of the market VERY well. I've read on here that her market reports are written about her customers, the market that she works in and her experiences. Makes sense to me, I collect Circ stuff, I generally just don't like mint state coins. She doesn't deal in circ stuff (I don't think she has a nice VF30 or better Barber in stock lol) but I certainly can appreciate what she sells.
The truth will set you free. Unless Chuck Norris has you, in which case, forget it buddy!

Well put Walkerguy21D. The market for collector coins is alive and well. Nice type, short set widgets are all doing fine. I could have sold several Barbers if I could ever find any.
While the weather certainly slowed things down, I found the show just fine.

Absolutely!
Thanks again for that 92-O at Baltimore... I love that coin. And I bet if I hadn't snagged it it would have NEVER made it to Saturday
Over the past few years, the Houston coin show has been evolving into a better and better convention. This year's event was the culmination of considerable effort and planning by the Greater Houston Coin Club, which succeeded in bringing a large contingent of PNG dealers to the show and transforming it into a Long Beach type convention. "The Money Show of the Southwest" had all the ingredients of a major show...an auction by Heritage Auction Galleries, a large core of PNG and large national dealers, local and regional dealers, and on-site grading by NGC and PCGS, all in a beautiful downtown convention center with the fabulous Hilton Americas Hotel attached by an enclosed corridor. I just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who helped make this show a resounding success.
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Cheers!

There are times when folks speculate if a member is banned and one way to find out if someone is banned is to attempt to login under the user ID in question. If a user ID is banned then a specific message is received that does not match the message received if the user ID is not banned, but the password used is incorrect.
