1964-D Jefferson MS66... thought it would grade higher

Here are pics of a 1964-D Jefferson. I went through 25+ original rolls and picked out best 5 coins and sent them to PCGS. Four graded MS65, one graded MS66. I was certain at least 3 would grade MS66 and a shot MS67... wrong again. PCGS is tough on Jefferson. (Needless to say, no FS coins).
Also a minor unlisted DDO.

The name is LEE!
may be the culprets. Little nick in hair and strange rim from 9:00 to 12:00 on the obverse.
What's going on with the F in Five?

PS: still a nice coin.
The other four coins are as mark free as this coin but this coin has a very strong strike and the others are average strike. That's how it's easy to see the DDO on this coin.
and the steps looked like a contractor came by and sawcut the steps for a expansion joints.

Me too, why would you think it would have a shot at MS67?

I can go through a few rolls of Morgan dollars- all really just MS62'ish/MS63 and then stumble upon that one that then looks like it is so superior to all the others, it just must be a true MS67.
Only, really it's MS65 but cloaked in a greater look because my eye has seen so many inferior coins.
As a stand-alone Jefferson, yours is attractive and worthy of the MS66 grade (nothing to sneeze at) but the hits on the steps and the left field reverse mark coupled with the various slight chatter keeps it out of the MS67 category, IMHO.
PCGS is tough on later date Jeffersons, it's not even funny.

This chatter that you mention is a relatively small area that did not strike-up, in other words, it is still the original planchet's surface. (cheek/steps)
"Keep your malarkey filter in good operating order" -Walter Breen
on the obverse. There just doesn't seem to be enough metal on
the design to get crisp strikes on both sides except as a fluke.
And, I'm sure you know... an MS67 coin would have been moon money, but an MS66 coin is nothing to sneeze at.
I like the coin... congrats!

No I know what you mean. I looked at 6 bags last Mo. $200.00 bags. And sent in 7 that I thought would go MS-65+ with Full steps and did not get one Full steps and I was tuff on them. But they dont like me any more I guess. I sent in one 1964-P I hope it come back MS-66 with Full steps will see. You have a Very nice Jefferson ther.
This is the one I sent in.
Hoard the keys.
Much nicer than any of my '64 nickels.
If these disappoint you send them to me.
Cheers
