If an overdate is defined as a die created in the year of the undertype then overdated to show the year in which it was used to strike coins, how many of those listed in this thread are not really overdates? I bet nobody can name them all!
Let me add that while the discussion continues as to the true definition of an overdate, this 1806 O-104a does fit the definition. This is the third use of this obverse die, thus its striking characteristics. This obverse die was used, annealed, overdated, hardened and then used again.
It looks like the engraver couldn't find his 8 punch and being the smart individual he was, he just took his 3 punch and punched it in backwards and then punched it in the correct way to create an 8.
Although the results didn't seem to work out as well as he hoped!

And I can say with a great deal of certainty that this coin WAS NOT used in the year of the overdate

And this used to be thought of as an "overdate" but is now known to be simply a repunched date...

Maybe 1893 was equal to 1393 by the Peruvian calendar and the engraver was trying to be "cute".
Then again, maybe not.
