Newp...thinking of changing my avatar. Yes? Post a cool penny!

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,894 ✭✭✭✭✭
My best friend, our beloved rottweiler, 11 years with us, said goodbye a couple of weeks ago. We're empty-nesters and it was pretty hard on my wife and me. My avatar is her. Smart, affectionate, protective (if it came to that)...never met anyone she didn't love.

We decided to move on. Advice from friends. Tonight we picked up our new friend. Eight weeks old. Named her "Penny" in spite of a friend's idea...he wanted us to call her "Scent". LOL.

I'm thinking of a new avatar but feeling guilty.

Post a penny to help me decide...new is great but I really loved the old one.
Lance.

  • Hi there,

Very sorry for your loss. image
I've no pennies to post I am sorry to say, Pr only Merc 10c and Jeff 10c. My only penny is a circ 1941 Lincoln found under my house along with a very original and very black MS Roosevelt 10c placed deliberately in an eastward niche under my house in my foundation during construction in 1947 I believe (some old custom?) which I found recently. Beautiful fairly even jet black with a touch of some sort of grey/blue in the light.
So, in lieu of a coin post maybe a suggestion? I'd not know, but perhaps there is some darside coin or other with 2 cute pups on them that could honor both? The new image would allow you to move on as you say, yet still remember both your trusty pals. Just a thought image

    Best wishes,
    Eric

I'm sorry for your old friend's departure, Lance. We've gone through that with our pets several times over the years, and it's never easy, and they all will always have their own place in our hearts and memories, as your girl will too. Penny will help you emotionally, and you will know if and when it's time to change avatars, or perhaps to have one of them as your avatar and the other one as a small signature photo for a while.

Hi Lance, I too am sorry for your loss. I've been in your shoes several times in my 57 yrs. I recommend that you not do a thing with your avatar right now. One day you will log on and see the dog you loved and lost and realize that its time to change the picture to your new friend. I believe that you will know instantly when that time is.

Sorry for your loss Lance. I have been there too. I can't post a Lincoln until I buy a new camera but here's something I still have on file that you may get a kick out of.

So sorry to hear of the loss, as it literally brought tears to my eyes. My family and I are still grieving over the loss of our 'bestest boy' in June...the hurt never goes away. Consider yourself fortunate you were able to laugh, play, and love for 11 years. Ours passed after only 3 1/2. I can't say it will get better....it won't....it's just different. We rescued our new friend, a 1 year old who was abused, and while the hole in your heart can never be repaired, giving your new friend a chance, and experiencing a different type of laughter, playing and loving can be very rewarding.

It'll never dry the tears, or heal the heartbreak, but it can and does make you feel a warm inside, as well as alive, again. Things can never be the same, but they can be just as good in a vastly different way. Again, my most sincere condolences.

edited to add.....keep the avatar.....it will always remind you of the good times. Sure, it will make you sad to see, but then you'll remember that your old friend never made you sad (except when you had to clean up those steamy piles....image )

edited again......what an adorable new friend you got!!!!!
    I'll come up with something.

I'm very sorry to hear about your sweet rotty's passing. Losing a beloved pet is truly one of the hardest things to deal with, next to the loss of a loved human being of course. We too lost our beautiful German Shepherd Mc a few years ago and still haven't gotten over it. We thought about getting a new puppy, but I travel a lot now and the kids are out of the house on their own, so it would be too hard to have a puppy home alone so much. But I think getting a new puppy does help fill that empty hole in your heart. In any event, here's one of my most beautiful pennies just for your new Penny!

I'm sorry to read of your loss. The last of our four cats is declining rather rapidly these days and I can only imagine how our two little girls, ages four-and six-years old, will feel when Squeeky passes.

  • You've have a rough run of loss lately, Lance. image And I'm very sorry to read this news...

On a positive note: as someone who trains dogs for search and rescue, I like your friend's wit and suggestion. So maybe "Scent" can be Penny's middle name?

She's a beautiful puppy. And maybe your old friend has "sent you Penny Scent" to ease your pain...

I know totally how you feel. Lost my best buddy about 2 months ago. Not quite 2 years old from acute pancreatitis. Very sudden and unexpected. I will probably get a new pup in a few months. Your new little one is a cutie. And my condolences for your loss as well. It's very hard.
