Some Observations on Anacs Photo Certificates....

After buying probably over 100 of these in the last couple of years, I've noticed a few trends, that might help some of you when buying these from auctions where photos are less than ideal.

1. Morgans represent the vast majority of the coins available with these old grading certificates. They also tend to be the series that shows the widest range of grading standards. Of the 10 or so Morgans I have purchased, probably 5 have been a point overgraded, 3 were graded correctly and 2 were a point undergraded.

2. Quite a bit of business strike copper from Indians on backward to large cents and half cents has minor problems that is not noted on the certificate. Usually a small spot of corrosion. Of the 6 Indian Head Cents I've purchased, 3 have been proofs and 3 business strikes. All 3 of the business strikes were listed as problem free, yet had some kind of rim problem. The 3 proofs were all properly graded to undergraded.

3. Uncirculated 20th century issues such as Washingtons, Mercs and Walkers seem to be fairly accurately graded to strong for the grade.

4. Mid- range circulated 19th century type seems to be the most accurately graded of all the coins I have purchased.

5. Commemorative half dollars of the 5 or so I have purchased seem to be solid for the grade to undergraded.

6. Last, I have purchased 3 gold coins, and all 3 are accurately graded.

Granted the sample is not huge, but these are the trends I have noticed.
