After spending a lot of time and money making a new website, why didn't the message boards get a fac

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
When I heard that a new PCGS website was coming, a frenzy of utmost frothiness came over me. I was excited to think how the look of the message boards would change, and how slick the improved boards would be. I had my secretary type in the website address for me, and I waived her off and pressed the Enter button myself for the big reveal.

The new website looks great. I then scrolled down to the link to the message boards, thinking I was about to be dazzled by a new look. Unfortunately, on my screen the message boards have not changed.

I am no computer guru, so does anyone know if the message boards are somehow different from the rest of the site, and did not get the new, updated look? I am sure a few strokes of the keyboard by the PCGS crew in Bangalore could have freshened things up a bit, but perhaps it is not that easy.

Does anyone have any comments? Or is this the case where if something is not broken, it does not need to be fixed?

The forums are indeed separate from the PCGS website. Different software.

Some folks would argue that there are changes that need to be made.

But since PCGS buys this forum software and does not write it themselves, PCGS is limited in the sort of changes that can be made.

I think it's fine the way it is.

Imagine a change that had the side-effect of losing the entire posting history of the forum. No, don't.

We already went through that in February, 2001, which is why the oldest "Joined" dates are from that time period.

    Longacre --

You've seen my face. It would take more than money to make an improvement!
  • Well that explains why I haven't noticed any change here. This one works fine IMO.

Why do we have to pay $9.95 a month to see the price guide in addition to $199 a year membership? This is my last year to be a member as they are pricing themselves right out of my league.

You can change the font size by going under the "customize" tab and altering the size.

These message boards run like a well-oiled machine, so pleeeease, PCGS, don't try to fix something that's not broken and ruin it!

The only thing you can't do is choose which grades you'd like to see (1-20, 25-60, 61-70). I guess I never use anything below MS62 so thats why I didn't notice. I can imagine that this will upset a lot of collectors though.

Edit! I am so tired of pcgs coin factsimage I cancled my pcgs coin facts membership immediatly following Mr Hall's statement regarding toned peace dollars.

Add my name to those who are very disappointed to see them now suddenly charging $120.00 a year just to show us their in-between grade price values. WOW!! image

You do realize that most price guides cost money, don't you?

It's funny to see people come on this message board (a service PCGS provides for free) to complain about being charged for a service that they would have to pay for anyway if they went to somebody else.

It's very simple really. All companys are in business to make money. If I owned a business I dang sure want to make money. Why is this any different? You bite the bullet and pay because you enjoy the services or you move on. I enjoy posting here but I'm not a Collectors Club or Coinfacts buyer.

Do you guys remember the old, old message boards in 1997? This is quite an improvement and, I believe, the second upgrade we are on since then. I originally joined in March 1997 and the boards were S L O W !

Longacre, is it true that you have suggested to management that they charge $1 per post to the forum to increase revenue and weed out the hoi polloi? image

I also heard that management decided to compromise and only charge for questions. image

I am glad that they have left it alone. Too many times improvement can be a step back. My cable ISP has made "improvements" and has basically destroyed their product. They are their own worst enemies, and I have let them know that. My idea of an improvement is a step forward, not three steps back. I can't wait until fios is finally installed. Goodbye cable...

So.......since this forum works just fine, I hope that PCGS leaves it alone. As was stated in an earlier post: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

It bugs me when people who use these boards and this sight almost 24/7 complain about cost. In this country you must pay for what you get, whether its food for the table, housing, clothing OR entertainment. THIS is entertainment and it's discretionary spending. I would spend $300 a year to get all the things available at this site. We are very fortunate that the boards are free to read. I signed up for CoinFacts because I may want to check it out sometimes and it is worth the $100 a year. My guess is that an all inclusive package of services will be forthcoming from PCGS in the future. I enjoy having my slabbed coins in the Set Registry. It is free, but it is worth something to me. I even spent $39 to have access to the NGC pop report. People spend their discretionary money on things they enjoy. If YOU enjoy this hobby and COINS, then realize it costs money to get all the enjoyment you want from it. JMHO. Steveimage

It really could be so much better. This forum lacks a lot of features that most forums have, most notably the ability to go to the last unread post in a thread. If that feature could be added to this forum then I wouldn't care if there was no upgrade.

Frankly I am happy with these boards as they are. When ebay "improved" their message boards, usage went down significantly. You can't even do something as simple as edit a post there.

I just hope they don't use the program that NGC uses. The reason that I participate here, rather than at NGC (other than the fact that PCGS is the BEST), is because the NGC boards are too difficult to operate.

Yup. Being a member of (and also administering) several forums, this board software is seriously stuck in the stone age. CU should investigate vbulletin, Invision Power Board, or one of the other modern software packages.

    Features like:

    1. Read most recent post in a thread.
    2. Receive an email when you get a PM (*SORELY* lacking, IMO)
    3. No restrictions on avatar upload periods.
    4. Embedded and more advanced editor options.
    5. More sophisticated codes for formatting.

Just about all the major packages support importing of data, so there shouldn't be the loss of posts. PMs are a different matter though, given the unusual way that PMs are organized here.
