Is a strikethrough a planchet flaw?

rld14rld14 Posts: 2,390 ✭✭✭
I was just reviewing some grades... I sent in an ex NGC64 28-S SLQ that had a reverse strikethrough on it... probably a small piece of wire.

What did it get graded? Genuine - 93 - Planchet Flaw.

What the ?????? PLANCHET FLAW?????

    Got a picture?
  • Not sure without a picture, but sounds like you should have sent it in under a "Mint Error" Submission

I had the same thing happen to one of my last submissions to PCGS, I sent in a 1941 DDO Lincoln in AU with a struck-through area on the reverse. I even put a note on the flip that the coin was as struck and not damaged. Didn't matter, it came back in a bodybag with the same reason (Planchet Flaw) on the label. All I can figure is that PCGS wants coins in their problem-free holders to be just that - problem free, whether the issue occurred before, during or after the strike.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

Seems as if the planchet was just fine - but debris got on to it as it was being struck, so it's a press production flaw, not a "planchet" flaw (unless it's the famous "Jed Planchet").

I remember that SLQ and thought it had a small reverse lamination.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it will not be sad for too long.

    Thanks Sean.

I can accept that they dont want any errors in normal holders if that's the case. But I can't see how a strikethrough is a planchet flaw..... makes no sense to me.

Yeah tell me about it! It is a strikethrough, you'd have to see it in hand though. Jay Cline saw it, and Steve Sabatino sold me the coin.

This would have turned out better if you had just sent it in for crossover... not cracked it out.

It's not the end of the world really... Not like I'm ever going to sell the coin.

It's neat, it has a small reverse cud too... the small one inside the rim to the SW of the "E" in Quarter. I have like 2 or 3 slabbed ones with that cud, but this one has a strikethrough as well image

I guess clips are now out of the question?? image

BTW, I just recently submitted a 1973 IKE with as a strike through Mint Error. If it bags, I'm gonna really whine!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Well, here's a planchet peel, Ike-Piso that they graded; maybe there were other problems with the ungraded ones?
