I found a 1964 Nickel and it almost got me a Parking Ticket...

I recently found a 64 nickel so I threw it in my coat pocket...So today I run down to the local AAA to pay my bill and as I go to insert the quarter into the parking meter I observe that it only takes pennies, nickels and dimes, no quarters...I dig in my pocket and I only have 3 quarters. As I started getting all upset about this arrangement I look down and spot a pennie on the ground...I grab it and throw it in and then I see it says 1 pennie=3 minutes...I thought well shoot, I can't accomplish anything in 3 minutes and I probably lost 1 minute thinking about what to do next...I quickly decided to search the car for more change...Nothin but a bunch of quarters in the ashtray looking thing, but I did find another pennie on the floor mat...I quickly grabbed that and stuffed it in the meter...Now it said I had 4 minutes ....At that point I was getting mad and I rifled through my trench coat and find the nickel...The nickel it claimed would give me 15 full minutes and a decent chance of not getting busted by the meter cops...Well, the darned thing wouldn't fit in the slot, it was apparently too big?? I looked at the meter and it now said I had 3 minutes left... I then figured screw it and just went in to pay...Of course there's this big line and it took forever...As I'm coming out there's the meter guy standing by my expired meter and I said hey buddy that meters broken! He starts messing with it and says "no it's working"...I said OH YA, "Here, take this nickel and show me that it works".... image

I didn't get the ticket and I got to keep my nickel...

I was going to say I'll give you a 1964 Nickel but now that I know you did not get a ticket I'll keep my Nickel. Funny story. If you need a nice new one PM me I'll give you one. image

Nice story. Very strange it didn't take quarters - and also strange it didn't take the nickel. Did you try using a different nickel? Maybe your '64 is thicker than normal.

Keep that nickel with you at all times! You maight just be able to beat a LOT of parking tickets that way!!! maybe buy a roll on e-Bay & re-sell them much higher as ticket-avoidance tokens!imageimageimage

I love your story, but for the added nostalgia of reading of someone paying a bill by any other means rather than on-line or in the mail.

Glad you didn't get ticketed by the meter reader! And who would have thought you would have been saved by a 64' Jefferson, lol.

Nice story. The 1964 nickel also reminds me of the late 1960's and early 1970's. That was because they made a humongous number of that date (1.9 BILL) and quite often it was often the date you received in change. Many times I would tell people that the nickel in their hands was a 1964....and I'd be right a lot of the time. It took 35 years before the mint finally broke that record and retired the 1964 nickels for good. They are probably "rare" today.

They would have had no potential issues if they found you turning on a dime.
