  We had a jeweler we know in the far south suburbs buy a gold eagle for a customer who wanted to drop it in a kettle. Haven't heard that it has hit yet.

  Wow. I never considered that someone would leave anything but legal tender in a collection box. I suppose this sort of thing must happen a lot. I wonder if larger churches (like the Roman Catholics) have a numismatic policy. You know like if a coin turns up then it's sent along to some "coin office" and an accepted sum transferred back to the local parish. Then the "coin office" could sit on the things or sell them in a Heritage auction to maximize the benefit to the larger organization.
