if a family member could be located, the coin would be given to them gratis (assuming they were interested in owning it)

Quite worn.... I wonder when it got its wear? If it was used as a pocket piece between 1881 and 1942, and then given by a grandfather to his grandson as he left for war, or if it was carved in 1942 and then carried as a lucky coin for years.

    Dennis,

i tend to think the latter (carved in 1942 and then carried as a lucky coin for years) as the wear seems to be on the engraved letters as well (top of "W" & bottom of "A" in APL show weakness from wear)

That is a fantastic piece. What a great find. April 1942 was the month of the Dolittle air raid on Japan, although of course there were other momentous events in the war that month (Bataan Death March). It seems likely all the armed forces have databases of tag numbers. I'm sure they'd all be interested in cooperating with any efforts to find out more.

We had a medal that sat in our office for years before I found it and decided to do some research. Turns out, it was a Medal of Honor! It apparently came in some bulk deal from a family in the New England area and was never recognized for what it was. It was awarded to a member of the Navy in the late 1800's who had saved a boy from drowning in a French port. I got a hold of the Medal of Honor museum (located on the USS Yorktown in Charlestown...a ship on which I've spent a few nights as a boy scout) and they were happy to add it to their collection.

Again, a neat find savoyspecial. Unless you find a potential family connection and can pass it along, please don't ever sell that coin. What a marvelous addition to any collection!

Here is a list of possibilities.

I like this one, but I can't be sure.

OOps, the first one didn't work. The site is free, run your own search and see what turns up. Good luck.

The number on the coin looks to be a service number!

If it was army the beginning letters would be RA for one that enlisted and US for one that was drafted.

As an example An Air Force member in the early 1960's would be something like :
    AF11882162

I hope this info helps your research.
