    These pieces weigh in at an impressive 2.5 oz, incredibly there are a few, less than 50 known, sixpences that weighed 5 oz. At any rate the threepences were the largest actually circulating medium ever issued in Great Britain, helped along no less by Matthew Boulton's steam presses. Before their advent these pieces in such a size would have been impossible in bronze. So in that distinction they are emblematic of the Industrial Revolution, they are testament to the technology that made them possible.

    Interestingly, I thought I was going to pick up a Wiveliescombe (Somersetshire) 3d earlier this week. Andrew Wager had it listed on eBay, and it ended up on Monday evening at just under $200. Since I'd just sent Andrew something close to that for an Augustus Cove token (the Withers plate coin), I had to keep my powder dry...the mortgage, you know?
