Why I Never

Jinx86Jinx86 Posts: 3,710 ✭✭✭✭✭
Last weekend I was at a show, laying out a few foins I have for sale infront of a dealer. Him and I are talking and joking, catching up. Then comes along another collector, he sees my coins, he likes my coins, he asks how much.... I held myself back and let my dealer friend finish telling me what he was paying. The spectator offers for my coins, above the dealers bid. I finished by selling of the coins...To the dealer... never made eye contact with the other person. Ive never had this happen to me before, but I think I handled myself well enough.

The other collector was offering like only $30 more so not like it was make or break.

You the man...that's exactly how it should have been handled. And shame on that mannerless collector. I hope he bought your coins at a profit for the dealer.

  • The dealer had paid for a spot to transact business. The other customer was there because this dealer had spent money to deal in coins. You were both there becase of this dealer. You did the right thing. I have never sold a coin in my life so I am not pro dealer, just pro do the right thing.

To reverse the story, what if you were buying and someone walked up and offered the dealer more money, what would the dealer have done?
    Many happy BST transactions
  • I'm surprised the dealer didn't say something. And not a "nice" something, either.

You did the right thing. Also it sounds like the "collector" got off pretty easy because similar scenarios don't usually share the same outcome.

  • Right choice if you had accepted the collector's offer he may have:

wanted to pay by check, which may not have been good.

after examining the coins more closely, either withdrawn or reduced his offer.

    Hoard the keys.
  • That is a transaction you can feel good about. I am sure the dealer was impressed if not grateful.
I was at a guys office last week buying some of his coins he had advertised. While I was there, before I had paid, someone called for one of the coins I was buying. He told him he had someone sitting at his desk to buy the coin. I could hear the guy on the phone offer to pay him more, but he did the right thing and said to the caller "Now that wouldn't be very fair to this gentleman sitting at my desk now would it?, good day sir" and hung up.
I know I was appreciative, as I am sure the dealer you were with was as well.

  • the big question is did the idiot buy anything off the dealer you sold your coins to? In the old days that guy would have been taken out and flogged! here is to the old days .image

Certainly the right thing to do. I don't know if I could have kept my mouth shut and chewed the guy out. That was really rude of him.

  • I remember being at a show taking my want list to table after table. Now I collect the kind of stuff you will rarely find at a big show if ever( doesn't mean i don't find something to buy) but after a couple of dozen tables a guy with a sell box heard me and approached me while I was in transit between tables and offered me two of what I was looking for at wholesale. I pulled out the cash and bought them on the spot. Am i wrong?

You also "saved your relationship" with the dealer.

It should probably pay off down the road, buying and selling with him.

Integrity goes a long way IMHO.

If this situation were turned around with the dealer being the "wrong" one, the thread count would be over 100 by now. I cannot understand why all the "dealer bashers" are not chiming in right now about the inconsiderate collector and his inappropriate conduct. That would be quite refreshing! After all, when something is wrong, it really doesn't make any difference who it is - it is the conduct which is reprehensible, whether it is a dealer or a collector. Rudeness is rudeness.

At any rate, this matter was handled with the utmost in diplomacy. The collector was completely out of line and should have been shown the door. The dealer paid for the privilege to set up at the show, and that can really add up at a major show. And please....... spare me the "but the dealer paid for the table with profits from collectors." The local supermarket pays for its overhead with profits generated by my purchases, but that doesn't give me the right to sell my home-made food goods inside the store.

I was wondering the same thing...what happened to the other guy? Why didn't the dealer tell him to beat it? Was the show promoter brought over to ask the guy to leave? Seems like he's the type of guy you wouldn't want walking around the show.

Probably not as long as the deal was low key and neither of you was actively soliciting away from the tables. Still probably best to take it outside of the bourse. What the other guy was doing was interfering with a deal in progress which is usually inappropriate.
