The 53rd Houston Money Show-It's SHOW TIME!!

Ok fella Texans..Whose all up for a lunch either Friday or Saturday?

and I have a silly question- I can submit at the show and not have it as a show special right- and have them send it back to me via the service level I submit under?

Those that want to meet up- I usually buy the first round of drinks ( non alcoholic or full blown drunkenness is allowed), post here the day y'all want to meet.

I'm thinking 12:30 at the PCGS tables.

post here or PM

and FEC if you are still about- come on and join us for a good time....

PM if you'll be there on Friday folks..

The map this year does not have the dealers names set up like they do in Long Beach..

I attended last year's show. I must say, turnout was disappointing but predictable under the circumstances.

I made the best of it & still enjoyed myself - met several fellow board members and a real nice Lady with Heritage.

I was disappointed that I didn't hook up with Monsterman. I'm not from Texas but am right next door.... literally. image

There is a good possibility that I'll make the Money Show again this year. It would be nice to get together with everybody.

Hopefully Monsterman has recovered enough to be able to attend this year's Show. That would be nice.

Wade, I need a mugshot so I can recognize you. I wonder if FEC is going to make good on his promises! LOL! imageimage

  • I will be attending for the duration. I do not have a table as I am just going as a buyer this time. I always enjoy meeting other members and wouldnt mind a quick lunch but would prefer a dinner type of thing due to all the buying I have to do at this show.

DizzleCC and I attended Thursday's S.W. Money Show Educational Sessions including presentations by Greg Bingham, Don Willis (who I previously knew from these message boards as PreNum (from Premium Numismatics) and Mike Fuljenz. These were each well worth attending, and were videotaped by David Lisot of Heritage.

I was able to sell some Morgan and Peace Dollars, trade some Capped Bust Halves for attractive new ones and had an all around good time at the show on Thursday through mid-day Friday. Boy, was it snowing this morning -- big flakes and lots of 'em!! image

Don Willis will be pleased to know that I renewed my PCGS Platinum Collector's Club membership at the show, and submitted my 8 coins included with the membership: One (1) $20 Liberty and Seven (7) $20 Saint Gaudens... image

Edwin how was the show today? weather and all I imagine it might have been a bit slow..
  • I didn't get a count for today, since I was too busy to check. One dealer feedback sheet said it was a bit light. But the dealers were excited to take photos of the snow.
Kudos to PNG for providing box lunches for our Greater Houston Coin Club volunteers!
I also met David Emslie of Fort Collins, CO, of PG&G Refining. He makes Daniel Carr's planchets. He showed me a video on his iPhone of Carr striking a one ounce "Pioneeer" gold coin issued by "Carr Emslie & Co." a modern Clark Gruber & Co. Emslie had a number of Carr gold strike errors and a nice test strike in silver of the one ounce gold coin. (Not for sale!) I sold him a gold ring, so maybe it might become part of a Carr medal in the future.

Kind of difficult to see but my wife took this photo with her phone. And here we thought we'd escape the snow by leaving Wisconsin....

    image
  • Well all I can say is that I woke up early so I could do a bit of business at the show, and I think I did pretty good. (my truck would not start!)

At first I was wondering if dealers were going to stay- kinda slow in the morning at first, but then it did pick up. Obviously no snow, sun was a shinin- clear be sky at 45-48 degrees.

Met with soty27- now smoe of you in the past have cast dispersions on his photography, I being a real smart ass that I am saw a few of the coins smoe of you questioned as to its 'blueness', let me tell you all one thing- this young man and his lady were way to cool to be from Wisconsin and his photog skills are exceptional ( I will show you all later in a separate post). Floor action was good from what I did see and thru talking to a few of the dealers it was a better day than yesterday. Mr. Osburn had some mighty wicked seated halves that I will be coming after here after my dog has his surgery- they fit in my 153 year old set that I am building. Mr. Twitty, Mr.Shapiro- what a greta group of floks to chat with. Picked up a real sweet 45-S WLH- as the boys would say, it is PQ!

I went to check out one of the Heritage auctions that I'm bidding on, and it will be a excellent candidate for one of my sets (I aint tellin squat til i win it). The young lady working the fron ttable was a sweetheart.

Made a nice deal with Jetproofs on a nice 54 Camoe Frankie- another for the set.

and then I went to the PCGS table to unload a submission- with a bit of time to spare- what 'nice' ladies at the booth. They wanted out of Houston probably as fast as they could, as well as NGC and Anacs, in fact Anacs was closed before noon! Laura was nowhere to be found - but left a few black boxes behind on the table- too bad I would have asked for them!

and what a surprise to see the mullet running around the show, he was slummin but had an interesting chat with him before Soty27 came back with my coins from imaging.

oh and I picked up 3 mint sets of which the washies in 2 are type B's but I have yet to open the 64 its sealed and original- this may be an interesting find...

and had a brief meet with JCMHouston- a very nice guy and he had a nice collection being shown. I don't know if he won any prizes for his display but it was nice..

All in all- besides a little cold air- I had a good time at this show..

  • Yes, JCMHouston had a great exhibit on George III Halfpennies. Very nice material there. Other exhibitors commented on it kindly.

The part about the PCGS staff yearning to get out of Houston is actually true. One of them even tried to persuade me to give her a ride to the airport on Friday afternoon. I declined due to the snowy weather and bad road conditions.

I "shared" a table with Albanese Rare Coins and while Albanese remained decently busy throughout the show, attendance was mostly light. A few dealers reported having a good show and a few others reported a terrible show. Most I spoke to thought the show was "okay" and they would come back again next time.

Thanks for the comments guys, I enjoyed meeting everyone and learned a lot from my first exhibit. Two of the judges were kind to me, one gave me a thrashing (probably deserved). The couple of dealers I talked to said the show was ok, good enough to come back next year, and there seemed to be a pretty decent line of people to get in from 10am until I left at 2.

I also want to say that RCtoner does some exceptional photography. I left him a group of early toned copper and some 19th C. German and Swiss I have had problems imaging and they turned out exceptional, good enough I dropped off another batch to get shot tonight. I've got them posted in 2 threads in the world forum but here are some examples:

1822 Farthing in 65BN that I just could never capture the color on.

    image

And a 1858 German States Silver Groschen in PF66 that defied all efforts to image until he got it.

    image
  • Thanks jeff and wade. Jeff those coins you had me shoot the first round are pretty amazing, I assume you have alot of $$$ in those although I know nothing of darkside coins. That copper coin that looks like silver blew me away, I thought for sure it was silver.Wade, I love the color on those coins you had me image as well and I also enjoyed your new coins you showed me.
