Look what I picked up tonight. Something pretty cool...NEW PICS ADDED

I picked this up tonight at a local B and M. He had several of these common morgans and a couple Walkers and Commems graded by Hall Investment Group. As you can see Hall graded it MS65 and I paid MS65 money, but this thing is clean. Nothing on the cheek. I would grade it at least MS66. Besides being super cool, do these things cary any premium? Opinions welcome.

Cool, but that flip may contain PVC.

That is very cool and a nice coin. If Conder was on here, I'm sure he could give us a lesson.

  • Its too clean for a 65 not enough for 67 (although the reverse is), safe 66 and nice to boot. Good job. Is that "officially" the first PCGS slab???? It may be worth more in the plastic than the upgrade. I would pay 66 money for that.

Very Nice! I've seen them before, but they do not show up for sale too often.
Is the morgan inside the flip also inside a "cointainer" shield? I think the above poster was correct about those
    flips containing pvc.

Very nice coin. Not wanting to pee in the kool aid, I would only comment that I think 65 is probably right based on limited view from images. Cleanliness of the surfaces is only ONE THING and as the grades get higher, it becomes probably less important than eye appeal and 'flash'. To my eye, the coin has limited enough luster to hold it to MS65. I would be reluctant to pay 66 money for a coin that wasn't extremely flashy. Anyway...you didn't pay 66 money for it so I think you did great!

A few notes on this. Info I have gathered from past posts.
Flip has a good chance of containing PVC do not let it come into contact with other coins.
That coin is in a Cointain inside of the flip so it is safe. If it were going too of been damaged it would have happened already.
These pre date the PCGS firm so the certification number is not found when I did a cert. verification. Note from Condors slab thread “PCGS started using the PCGS1 rattler in Feb of 1986”.
As for the grade this would be like the Rattlers and Old Green's in that a lot of the coins where graded tighter back then, but not all of them will upgrade today.

As a side note I wonder if anybody has ever sent one of these in to PCGS for crossover service and what happened?

  • Yes the flip looks to be a flip cotaining PVC. The coin is encased in a PVC free Cointain within the flip and heat sealed. As for the grade, the luster is there as some asked. Its a solid MS66 in my book. The dealer I bought it from had 5 Morgans (all '81 and '82 S) all graded MS65. It took a while to cherry the best one. All appeared to be very conservatively graded and Im guessing two of the three would grade MS66.

Im with LindeDad, this coin has been in the flip for probably over 20 years and there are no signs of PVC contamination. I think the damage would have happened by now.

I would probalby pay a few extra bucks if I had come across it. So, I would says the flip does add value for some people.
