Suggestions for US Mint products for 2010

Over the past few years the US Mint has given collectors some wonderful coins, the reverse proof coins, the Ultra High Relief coin, the gold buffalo coins, even the Liberty spouse coins.

In 2008 they ended many series of coins though, and people now seem disappointed by the lack of products offered.

So for 2010 what new products should the mint offer to make collectors return to buying?

I will offer a few changes that I think would help.

1] The US Mint should change the design on the W silver eagles to something other than the bullion coins. Perhaps make it the 1795 to 1804 Draped Bust Dollar design. It is still a Liberty design so should be possible as long as it fits the definition of the law.

2] The American Gold eagle coins can have the design changed on the $5, $10, and $25 coins.

My recommendation would be;

a] $5 gold coin change to the 1908 to 1929 Pratt Indian Head Half Eagle design.
b] $10 gold coin change to the 1907 to 1933 St. Gaudens Indian Head Eagle design
c] $25 gold coin change to 1795 to 1797 Scot Capped Bust Eagle design

These 4 design changes would not add to the amount of products offered but would instead improve the amount of designs offered.

I would guess that mint sales would skyrocket as a result of this and many would start to collect these series as a consequence.

One other option is to make a Ultra High relief Silver eagle, I think that coin alone would be a massive seller.

Also doing away with platinum coins entirely and starting a palladium coin instead, possibly a high relief.

Just my two little cents on this anyway.image

    Seems to me the Secretary can change the designs of both Silver and Gold bullion Eagle coin once within a 25-year period. The only restriction is that the obverse must bear a depiction of Liberty and the Reverse must bear an Eagle. Except for the Gold bullion Eagle coins, where the Reverse must bear an image of a flying male eagle with olive branch above a nest with a mother eagle and hatclings.

    The Gold Buffalo bullion coins can be changed after the first year of issue.

    So 25 years would make it 2011 when they can change these designs unless perhaps they pass legislation. All I see for the gold eagle is the $50 coin design.

    have a design determined by the Secretary, except that the fifty dollar gold coin shall have—
    (i) on the obverse side, a design symbolic of Liberty; and
    (ii) on the reverse side, a design representing a family of eagles, with the male carrying an olive branch and flying above a nest containing a female eagle and hatchlings;

    PS Thanks for the linkimage
  • I'd love to see a reverse gold eagle again.. That'd be my wish.
  • Lets hope they at least continue the Silver Eagle Proofs.
