2008 W $10 AGE 1/4 Ounce

Just wondering if anyone has noticed the extreme price range of the 2008 W $10 Unc Gold Eagles on ebay? They seem to be soaring in price day by day. Currently the price spread on ebay ranges from $930 raw to Over $2,200 for MS70. What would be a realistic buy price?

Comments

  • A raw coin just sold for $930 with 5 bids over $850.

  • I saw that, I was actually watching that auction. Two MS60 slabs sold last night for a little over $1,000 each

  • << <i>A raw coin just sold for $930 with 5 bids over $850. >>

Wow - when did these jump so much in price?!
  • The $2200 is way overpriced since the PCGS 69 and 70s are at about a 50/50 ratio. I think something in the $930-$975 range for raw or 69 is a good price.

    Have been trending up.

Recent corrected audited mintage is 8885 less than earlier reported 9,300

Some people took their eye off the ball focusing on "technical" mintage figures (e.g. burnished plats) and overlooked the 08-W $10 gold with its mintage nearly 3x-4x the technically lower mintage coins. But, I have mentioned before, demand is as important as supply. There is stronger demand for the 08-W $10 than other items with lower mintages from 2008 - hence, the near tripling in price year over year (exceeding most platinum coins and gold buffalo coins from 2008 at this point).

I know a few people now taking their profits of 200% or greater year over year (not much performing better in the world I know of) . Didn't RYK even buy one of these and double up in less than a year as his test modern coin???

That's right, I remember seeing a post about that. Good thing I have on of these little babies! Now if only I bought a full set of Buff Proofs as well...

I remembered you selected this one. Great pick (and 100% annual return) for a modern newbie!!

  • I wonder if they will hold their value?

  • << <i>I wonder if they will hold their value? >>

Now that is the real question isn't it?

Floor of $10 or spot price of 1/4 oz. gold.

    Going for it is.............

    1) Lowest mintage coin in very popular AGE series(non error)

    2) Popular 1/4 oz size....better IMO than 1/10oz. (too small) or 1oz. (too expensive)

    3) All fractional proof and burnished are discontinued.

  • All very attractive factors for this coin. I think it will continue to hold/increase in value in the short term, but in the Very long term it will probably decrease

The higher price for the 1/4 ounce $10 2008-W burnished AGE makes much more sense than the current price of the 1/2 ounce $25 coin, which is trading at double melt even with a much higher mintage (thanks to the 2-coin half-ounce Buffalo-AGE set).

I agree, I'm surprised how much they are fetching. Also the 2008 AGE proofs are going alot, giving their mintage is much more than the Unc.

  • I had ordered six of the $10 AGE 1/4 oz uncs last year, but returned them because I thought the mintage would be high. A few days after I sent them back, the Mint put out the "sold out" sign and I had returner's remorse. I didn't think there was any chance of getting them back so I didn't even try. About a month and a half later, I get a box from the Mint with my "returns". It turns out my return was past the 30-day return window so my return was declined. Boy was I happy then, but I'm ecstatic now. And the Mint didn't even charge me postage to send them back to me. image

  • I ordered four of the damthings, got impatient with the delay (and aggravated with the USM in general), so went to cancel the order, only to find they were shipped that day. image

The good news is I bought 20 of these from the mint. The bad news is I sold all but a couple of 69s and 2 70's earlier this year because the good news is I bought a boatload of buffs as well and didn't want to sell them right away. Oh well I have to take the good with the good lol.

The real good news is that 18 out of 20 graded pcgs ms70! Also had a great 70 ratio with the buffs as well. Man what a year! image

I have three of 1/10 in proof in unopened boxes and one1/10 W MS in an unopened box. Guess these arn't soaring as much. I do have the 1/4 ounce W MS though bought from the U.S. Mint.

Thanks for this thread. Anticipating the low mintage, I put a couple away, but had not been following them. Am glad to see some basic fundamentals paying off!

  • I honestly think the $10 gold will hold its value for awhile considering there are no new highly desirable coins being released by the mint in the near future. Attention will stay focused on the 2008's until more attractive coins are released to shift focus.

The Burnished 2008-W AGE 1/4th ozer seems to really have taken off. I wonder whether the tragectory will continue, but it sure is fun watching a new issue like this launch and then take off!!!!image

A 2008-W proof $10 Gold Eagle in OGP just sold on eBay for $929! This followed a similar sale yesterday for $860. What's going on??

Meanwhile, two PCGS MS70 $10 Gold Eagles (non-First Strike) sold today for $1299 each!

Possibly folks confusing the MS from the Proofs? I get calls every week from collectors who have no idea what the difference is between MS and proof gold coins - some after spending thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars already.

  • How many of you are holding on to your $1o 2008W AGE? Many are selling and taking their hefty profits, cant blame them. I plan to hang out to mine for a bit longer before I sell, I think we are going to continue to see fast price run on these coins.

  • Last year at start of the financial panic one of my partners who never buys coins asked me where he should go to buy gold.

We discussed B&Ms and coin shows but in the end I suggested he buy some 2008-W $10 AGE unc. from mint.

I explained that they took credit cards, there would be complete confidentiality, no question of genuine/fake, etc., etc.

I further explained that while at the time he would be paying a $75 premium to spot that IMO the numismatic potential for appreciation made the premium worth it.

    He bought 50.

His first and to my knowledge only coin purchase!!
