Do you PURCHASE... "Genuine" .. for your collection?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
I can't believe that the search feature finds nothing under "genuine" in Titles.

So, I'll start a thread on the question.

Will you buy a ...Genuine.... for your collection or stick only to an actual graded specimen?

Personally, I'd pass unless I thought there was a "chance."

    All my coins are genuine.

If you refer to the Gennie holders...I have had a few, that I sold. The only way I go Gennie, is if the coin is super-rare, and I got a killer deal on it.

Nah, a Gennie holder says to me "This one's F'ed up, keep looking..."
And I can't afford extreme rarities, so there is ALWAYS a better example to be found. image

I guess with the theme of this thread, what do you say to coins collected in the era that it was exceptable to clean coins? Many CBs in all denominations have been cleaned - are they to be rejected?
To answer the original question, yes.

I haven't bought one yet because I haven't found one I wanted. If I like the coin though...sure. I have several coins in my collection that would probably garner Genuine lables if submitted.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • So far, no.
  • Nope, there are several examples of rare coins in a variety of grades so there is no reason to go with a gennie.

No, I will not buy a Clened or Damage coin or so on. But that is just me. image

Yes, absolutely. There are some outstanding beautiful bargains to be had in that area. Would you rather have a Good problem free example or an AU example with a small rim ding for the same price?

There are some rare varieties that I would take cleaned, holed, run over by a train, dragged down the street, polished etc.... I'd put this into a genuine holder and have no issues keeping it. image

I purchased an ANACS "details" graded large cent without hesitation:

I do not own any PCGS "Genuine" coins.

I've bought a few for my 1908-S IHC grading set to help teach myself (and maybe others) what to look for .
  • I routinely consider PCGS "Genuine" holdered coins, old ANACS small slab net graded coins and will surely consider NGC details graded coins when I run across them for inclusion in my type set. It's important to note that my type set is housed in a humble Dansco 7070, so any slabbed coin I buy for it gets cracked out anyway. Basically, if the coin will look good in an album according to my standards I don't really care what the slab says. From that way of thinking "Genuine" slabs can be a good deal.

Us copper collectors are fine with genuine for some coins. Husak had a few genuine coins in his auciton. I have some very nice NCS and ANACS details graded large cents.

But I would appreciate it if the rest of you guys keep passing.

    Buy then NO.
But I made one that confirmed my doubts on the grading skill of a not to be named grading firm that likes to sue people.

I purchased my first "Genuine" coin a few days back. Usually I try to stay away from them though.
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

  • Yes, but I do offten look to upgrade and if you pay a fair price you offten can get you money back. A lot of people who say they would never buy cleaned or damage coins really ment to say they won't buy coins that are "graded" cleaned and damaged but are ok with them if its in a problem free holder.
  • i dont have any but would buy one that said questionable color if the coin is nice. The TPG's dont know what they are doing with grading toned coins anymore so why not ?
  • If I like the coin and the price is right-you bet. At least I know upfront what drawbacks the coin might have.

I wouldn't buy a coin in a "genuine" holder unless the price was extremely low.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I would buy coins in "Genuine" slabs, it just depends on the coin and what the reason is, though I have not bought one yet.

A scarce darkside coin that I inherited from my grandfather (raw) now resides in a Genuine holder (improper cleaning). I was concerned about the authenticity so sent it in, but will keep it where it is for protection.

I added one recently and am very happy with it....hard to share and show when it was raw.

  • For extremely rare coins, your options may be a coin in a Genuine holder, or no coin at all.
  • RampageRampage Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭✭✭
It depends on the coin really. If I am trying to simply fill a mid-circ grade album of a series, I might consider a "genuine" coin as long as the look is still appealing. For example, a coin with a really old cleaning that has begun to retone, may not be a bad coin for an album. Similarly, if a coin has a minor, somewhat hidden scratch that does not severely affect the eye appeal, I may buy it. Again, it really depends on the coin.

The coin in the link below would NOT be one I would buy, because the scratch is just way too severe and it affects the eye appeal in a very negative manner. Although, without the scratch, the coin would have sold for at least ten times what it sold for.

    Ditto
  • I would. But, as many others have said, it would depend on the coin.

Here's a "genuine" coin that started the post-NCS NGC genuine service. You wouldn't be proud? image

The only one I have, an 1856 D gold dollar, certainly a RARE coin in every regard, with only about 80 or so surviving. Probably once mounted, there is a very slight evidence of some rim damage but all in all.....Im happy with it. *THOUGH* I did take quite a whacking on these learned forums for the purchase, I dont recall anyone posting an image of their 56D..................image

    imageimage
  • Rim nicks don't bother me, so I'd purchase one in a genuine if the coin was nice in every other regard, and a rare coin to find problem free.

So far I have not purchased, or even considered, any coins in PCGS genuine holders. I would reconsider that stance if I was down to a few otherwise unaffordable "stoppers" for my set.

Yes, I buy PCGS Genuine coins questionable color -91. I have bought a couple of cleaned -92 coins when I had them in hand and could not detect the cleaning they refered to.
In my opinion questionable color coins I buy, are in no way questionable....my opinion differs from the graders sometimes.

Belongs to a friend of mine but from the photos I took of it, most forum members could not guess it was genuine. This is the type of stuff that is desirable to me as it usually comes with a steep discount. Nobody in the thread guessed it was questionable color.

I don't even look at PCGS "Genuine" coins, much less buy any.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
