1916- D Merc. will it upgrade?

Here are some photo of a merc dime I picked up in a NGC holder. I am thinking of either submitting in holder to PCGS or cracking it out, but I want a second opinion on what you thought it would grade.

Some of those photo's make it look like its been cleaned.

I do not know what this coin currently grades but strongly advise that if you do submit for a cross over, DO NOT crack it out.

Is that based on the hairlines? Because those are actually on the holder.

No, the images aren't too large. Hmm, I'd guess VG8-10 for the grade.

Looks like a G6, maybe VG8, to me. Images make it look shiny...hope it's just the images.

I'd only try crossing that if it's an an NCS holder.

Photos are too poor top make any judgement. Making them large doesn't help.

I agree....I don't think those photo's are doing that coin any favor....white balance is way off and the coin looks like it was scrubbed but I assume a lot of those lines are on the slab and not the coin?

Appears to be VG8 but cleaned IMO.

It's probably been cleaned, BUT - since it's THE key, and it's already in a TGP holder, PCGS will probably cross it over. But, as said previously, DON'T crack it out.
I guess the grade is VG8-10. PCGS would probably give it a G6. They tend to undergrade keys, or at least, they grade them with a much closer eye.

Do you have any examples of this? It's pretty widely known that TPGs grade keys a bit looser. Borderline coins are usually given the benefit of the doubt and coins with minor problems (like this 16-D) get into holders whereas a common date with that same minor problem would be bagged (or gennied)

Well, right off the top of my head, I had an 1886 Liberty nickel a while back that I though was a sure bet F12, maybe F15 that came back from NGC in a VG10 holder.

Then, I recently submitted several IDENTICAL (as far as I could tell) Ike's, one was a 1976-P Type 1 (semi key), a 1976-D Type 1 (common), and a 1974-P (common), and I'm not kidding, these coins were identical in every way I could tell, except for the date and mint mark. Here were the results:

    3 1 15994026 7415 1974 $1 US MS65
    4 1 15994027 7418 1976 $1 Type 1 US MS64
    5 1 15994028 7420 1976-D $1 Type 1 US MS65

    The semi-key 1976 Type 1 price guide at 64 is $60, and $285 at 65.

Maybe it's just me, but it sure seems that the TGP's tend to scrutinize keys and even semi-keys. Maybe I just have rotten luck though...

Well, this coin is in a F12 holder. I always thought the obverse was a VG10 and it got a bump because of the date. I don't own it anymore, so I guess it's moot.

Hmm, yeah good call on that one. Definitely not F12. Like I said, maybe I just have bad luck.
