Has there ever been a coin design that was universally liked?

It seems to me that whenever a new coin design is introduced, people come out of the woodwork to bash it and generally spew venom.

So...has there ever been a time where a new design was met with overwhelming support? Where people were actually happy about the new design?

I have never heard much negative (historical or current) about the Saint $20, Walking Liberty Half, or Buffalo Nickel designs. Those are probably as universally liked as any design.

No, but there are several designs that are close to universal such as the Saint Gaudens double eagle or the Oregon Trail commem.

That's funny; I don't like either of them.

Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

  • I would guess the Flying Eagle Cent.
When it first became available, people lined up to exchange their Large Cents for the new smaller Cent coins.
The Large coppers weren't all that well liked.

I agree with these and would add Winged Victory (Mercury) dimes to my list. SLQs might fit in if they were high grade.

I very much doubt that we could get ten people on this forum to agree on much of anything... well, maybe a few things... image

Historical files contain many complaints about the Saint-Gaudens $20 & $10 and the Buffalo nickel. The WL half seems to have been mostly ignored. The Standing Liberty quarter was roundly panned for the reverse eagle and ignored for the obverse. (But the mint disliked the design due to problems striking good coins.)

The Mercury dime was praised by nearly all newspapers and other media sources, although there were objections to the initials on the obverse.

I think historically, Ray is on to something with the FEC.
If for no other reason than people really did hate those damn large cents.

Weren't Morgans quite popular during their day or did people dislike their size?

Morgan dollars were the source of many complaints both about the flabby Liberty and scrawny eagle (or buzzard).

Most folks seemed to like the Liberty nickel once the reverse was changed.

Even decades later the public didn't want them. But that's not to say it was because of the design.

Thank you for the responces. Some had me literally laughing out loud.

If everyone generally liked the Flying Eagle cent. why was it only used for two years? I like the design myself! (But yet I still have not completed the series...LOL)

It's a fact:The Barber coinage was universally liked when first issued. The liking continued until the very last coin was minted. These coins currently have a huge following, more than 90 years after the last were made.

A close second for being universally liked would be the Lincoln-Wheat cent.
