I like the rule, makes the corners and safeties try to hit harder.

I look at it like this .... If you want to hit a guy trying to catch a pass and prevent the pass, knock the ball out. That's what you have to do everywhere else on the field. I see no reason to think the defender should get an extra advantage just because the play is near the sideline. What's next? .... How about defenders catching the receivers in mid air from the middle of the field and carrying them out of bounds!

It's about fault; if the receiver clearly makes the catch and clearly would have landed in-bounds, then he shouldn't be penalized because of something out of his control. It's the forward-motion rule, analogized to a pass reception.

the rule was changed as the officials could never make the right call even with replay.

i like the rule. the offense gets its fair share of breaks in the rules. how many times do you see a WR run into a defensive player and ends up with an illegal contact flag.

NFL... It used to be that if you made catch but were pushed out of bounds before getting both feet down, the ref could award you the catch anyway. The rule was changed this season. Receivers got screwed.

Thanks. I was unaware of the change, but I am not a big NFL fan.

ALL of the new rules favor receivers except this one. I like the fact that DB's are rewarded for doing their jobs. I hate having a judgment call where the ref has to decide what would happen in a hypothetical situation. Good rule change.

Agreed. The new rules have made this league a QB/passing league. Remember the days when Trent Dilfer or Doug Williams could win you a Super Bowl? That will not happen again as long as the current rules are enforced the way they are. The NFL has tried to dumb it down to keep it as black-and-white as possible for the refs, and it is ruining the game. That's why ticky-tack roughing the passer calls and illegal contact penalties are the norm.

If they are going to call illegal contact as strict as they have been these last 3-4 years, they should at least remove the automatic first down portion of the penalty, and just make it a 5-yd penalty. Half the time it is against a WR on the opposite side of the field that the ball is thrown to. It's a joke.
