So went to Target today in the middle of the afternoon on lunch break. Totally caught someone feeling up the packs. Called him out on it and he got pretty pissed. Brought the manager over because we were being so loud. She asked what was going on and I explained it to her. She looked at the guy and told him to grow up. Then she looked at me and said the same thing. She then stated that men who "play" with pieces of cardboard with pictures of men on them have mental issues.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

It bothers me that young kids buy these packs in hopes of getting a 1-2$ card and they are gone because some idiot searched all the packs.
Plus... the odds of getting any decent hits at retail are next to nothing. Hobby boxes are where it is at.
It is not my job or anyone elses here on the board to police the Target card aisle unless we are employees of Target and told to do so by our manager. (Though I am sure Billion dollar companies appreciate the free labor from the Vigilantes).

Really Guru you need to stop frequenting these places if it drives you to confrontation over and over again. The cards are going to get searched and stopping the guy that is there when you stop by the store does not mean someone 5 minutes earlier didn't do the same thing.
Do you go after people who search Rack or Cello packs for the stars on top as well???

Maybe the odds on retail aren't that good, and I agree that hobby is where it's at if you want hits and if you can afford to buy hobby boxes all the time. But not every kid has access to a hobby shop - many towns have none. Retail may be the only opportunity for their hobby. Sure there's eBay as an outlet, but not many young kids can afford to buy hobby boxes and packs coming off eBay have probably been searched as well.

Since you were tryin to do something good - I would see who the main manager is - ask for a moment with her and ask her to repeat what she said to you - if she has the balls; I doubt it.

Kids and parents buy alot of cards from those stores target/Walmart. The kids get a thrill out of a good pull like everyone else.
In turn keeps them interested in this Hobby. If this Hobby has any future it's through the kids in my book.
Maybe just Maybe she isn't a Good Manager, and she should go back to checking people out at the register.

1) You walk up and yell something to the effect of "Hey AH, what the F are you doing? Little kids buy those packs and get nothing because pieces of S like you search the packs. Stealing from kids- What the F is wrong with you?" This will draw attention to him to the point where he might be too embarrassed to ever try again. Make sure you draw the correlation with searching packs and stealing from kids. It will be nearly impossible to argue with you, even for the b*tch of a manager you lucked out with.

2) Ask for the manager in charge of the store and rationally explain that there's a scumbag searching the packs and the little kids whose parents come to the store and spend hundreds on merchandise every week are getting ripped off because the searcher is pulling all of the good cards. You might have to explain a little about the hobby and how some valuable cards can be pulled and the searchers know how to find which packs their in.
Just walking up and having a private conversation with the piece of crap is going to get nothing accomplished.
Seriously, I know I'm asking for it when I do this. It just pisses me off. And to be honest I haven't really given a crap for the last year because I haven't been collecting. I walked into Target today to find some cards to rip just to get back in the spirit and this took place. It was enough for me to say something.

The manager who said what she said is in NO POSITION to say what she said to EITHER customer and in my opinion, if she was my employee, it would have been her LAST action at my business. Rudeness to any customer for any reason should not be tolerated at all.
Pack searching is just as morally wrong and undefensible as pack resealing, IMO. To say something is morally correct, if the guy has a pissed reaction, its because he KNOWS he's guilty of being a d-bag.
Disclaimer: Disagreeing to this post qualifies you as a d-bag as well.
If you have done this you are no different that the pack searcher and probably even slightly worse.
Take the next pack in line and move on with your life.

I have to agree with Guru's position on this matter , but I think CDNUTS # 2 approach is the best way to go about handling it ! I took my Grandson to ShopKo ( all the cards are up front of the store by the registers ) , and we purchased 8 packs of Allen & Ginter ( he wanted to get a Puhol's card in a pack ) ! Got home and we opened them , and one pack that I opened was completely bent and bowed ! I promptly threw them in the trash can ( my wife said later that I should have taken them back and got a refund , but I was so mad and didn't want to hassel with it , but if it happens again , I will return it to draw attention to the store about the problem ) ! I usually only buy Blaster box's , for the above reason , but my Grandson wanted the A&G , and they were the only ones available !
I did open a pack with a Puhol's , and he was estactic ( He's 8 years old , but I've explained to him many times about card condition ) ! Imagine his disappointed if the bent searched pack had the Puhol's in it !!!!!!!!

Why are you shocked. Have you seen the prices of packs recently? Even the cheapest blasters will set you back $20. When I was a little kid I never had $20 bucks on me outside of a birthday. Does a kid want to spend $20 on some cards which give little to no enjoyment or put the same money towards a video game which gives hours of enjoyment.
The card manufacturer's in trouble, especially in this economy, which is evidence by the incredible consolidation in the market this year alone.

I'm also surprised that a retail manager told 2 customers to grow up -- i don't think that's customer service 101 and all she did is alienate both sides.
Lee's #1 approach would be my choice. A guy might get lucky and the pack feeler would be waiting in the parking lot for even more abuse.

I disagree with this statement. If you're a business owner, look over the packs and mark them up, that's no bueno. If you're a collector, and see a star on front of a rack/cello, it makes it's part of the fun of collecting those types of packs. Topps has been doing racks for a very long time and understand this. They collate their racks to intentionally show a star and or rookie card on top.
I'm shocked that some of you condone this. Would those of you that condone this approve of your children doing this? Yourselves?

But I will say this, you don't have much going on in your life if you have to bring a scale into a Wal-Mart and weigh packs of baseball cards to find inserts. You are getting as close to the bottom as an adult male can get.

You still have to feel up the packs, handling them looking for the star on the front or back, pushing the wrapper around and possibly doing damage. Why not leave the pack with the star on top for the lucky kid to find it?

Fortunately I never have anyone come up to me at random in a store while I am shopping and challenge my shopping habits. It may have something to do with being 6'3" 230 lb but I digress.
That being said if a stranger challenges me there will be no second chance for either of us. Either he will take me out or I will take him out but most certainly I will not stand there and take the abuse from the punk.
If a stranger comes up in a civil manner then we can discuss.
What Guru pulled falls into the challenge category in my book, especially getting the manager involved from having some sort of public hissy fit.

Exactly, necssitating more plastic wrapper manipulation possibly damaging the cards worse than a pack feeler. The double standards portrayed are hilarious at times however, because I guarantee almost everyone here has gone searching through racks or cellos looking for the star when a kid would be better off with the cards.
