2000 Proof Set: PR69DCAM vs PR70DCAM vs PCGS Price Guide

I was able to purchase a complete (17-coin) 2000 Proof Set in PR70DCAM for $1,800 (purchased one coin at a time; all costs included, e.g. shipping, etc.). The going price for a PR69DCAM set is $220 and the current PCGS Price Guide for a PR70DCAM is $8,250. The PR69DCAM set is 12% of the price I paid for my PR70DCAM set (8x multiplier). I paid 22% of PCGS Price Guide for my set. Is this typical for a modern proof set?

Is there really any two-way market for this kind of thing?

I haven't had time to research prices on all 17 coins but you seem to be quite a bargain hunter. --Jerry

I have found that the market for Modern proofs has tanked in the last year or so. Coins in the 70DCAM grade that sold for several hundred dollars are going for less than 1/3 of that now. I have been selling my proofs on eBay for less than half of what I paid for them only a few years ago. These have been the 69DCAMs in the half and dollars. I have even had some of them go unsold at a start price of $7.49.
I finally just threw what was left in a box in the closet.

I have only looked at some PF70DCAM PCGS Kenn halfs, and I agree that recent Heritage prices are considerably lower than in past years. 1/4 to 1/3 seems pretty accurate. Seems you can get common dates for $125 where a few years ago, they were several hundred dollars.

Personally, I'm amazed this whole 70 fad has lasted as long as it has. Has a sense of realism started to set in?

  • As far as a modern proof set is concerned I personally would not shell out the bucks for a set of 70 Dcams. The mint produces a real decent set of 69's..Dcams..there is quite a bit of price differential between the two and I can be happy with the rest of my cash.If you are of mindset that you have to have a perfect coin..then I suggest you wait a few more years when the 70's are more prevailant...image

  • Can I ask why you chose that particular date. I would think the more popular 1999 or 2001 set might be worth more in the future.
BTW imo I think you got a good deal and hold for years and then sell if you want to.
