<< <i>The PCGS guide is intended to reflect full retail price; I think it succeeds. >>
The problem is that collectors don't want to pay full retail. Why not be honest with everyone and show both the wholesale and retail prices for each coin. Then the buyer and the seller know the current range of a particular coin's value so that they can negotiate a fair price. Steve
The OP is just another Stewart Blay thing. I take it with a grain of salt. PCGS doesn't give his gems the upgrades they "deserve." Enough said. Credit goes out to HRH for making an effort to do something near impossible. As RYK says:
> there is nothing that David Hall or anyone else can to do make everyone happy on this issue.
The true fact is that the the Heritage auction archives is a better price indicator than the PCGS price guide for PCGS coins.
I am of the opinion that there should be a price range(a high price and a low price) given in a price guide.
The same is true with red brown copper coins. Especially early copper coins in which the amount of red on a coin is a factor in determining price and grade.
"PERRY HALL - I KNEW SOMEONE WHO BOUGHT A COIN FOR $17,000 IN AN MS 65 RED HOLDER. THE COIN WAS REALLY AN MS 64 R/B. PCGS BOUGHT THE COIN BACK FOR $75,000
THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM BECAUSE PCGS CONSIGNED THIS COIN TO A MAJOR AUCTION AND IT BROUGHT $35,000.

Stewart, Glad to hear you agree with me that there should be a price range (high/low) given in a price guide. Maybe you could influence David and Jamie to CONSIDER such a effort toward improving the PCGS price guide. Obviously it would take quite an initial effort, BUT the ultimate result could, in my opinion, make the PCGS price guide the DEFINITIVE guide to coin pricing in the USA. Steve
Stewart, very good question for the coin market. Just having completed the liquidation of the major portion of my PCGS registry set through Teletrade auction. I have to say that the price guide needs major adjustments, to being lowered, as I took major hits on almost all the coins assigned. With the exception of some of the toned coins and Variety high end coins in moderns, these coins perfomed very well. Even the Major Variety coins did not do as well as the price guide shows. Here is a partial breakdown of some of the coins with Price guide and sale amounts. As I used the price guide for insurance for shipping.
PCGS Price Guide Sale Amount
95DDO $185.00 $85.00 MS68 Red 84DDO $650.00 $320.00 MS67 Red 83DDR $325.00 $200.00 MS64 Red 53P $225.00 $130.00 MS66 Red 52P $275.00 $95.00 MS66 Red 51P $310.00 $90.00 MS66 Red 49P $250.00 $220.00 MS66 Red 48P $350.00 $160.00 MS66 Red 47P $260.00 $150.00 MS66Red 46P $350.00 $130.00 MS66 Red 22D $550.00 $380.00 MS64 Red 09P $425.00 $280.00 MS66 Red 09VDB $475.00 $250.00 MS66 Red These are some of the examples many more basically in the same category in amounts similar in all coins sold (above).
Modern Variety 72PDDO2 $75.00 $425.00 MS65 Red 72PDDO7 $50.00 $130.00 MS65 Red 72PDDO8 $50.00 $120.00 MS65 Red 72PDDO9 $30.00 $210.00 MS64 Red These were a real surprise the only real major increase in the sale. I was overall happy with the results with the way the market is with the economy in the mess that it is in. I've tried Heritage, Superior Galleries before but was not impressed with their performance with the exception of the one major coin that was sold at Heritage a few years back. Again this is just a sample of the coins that were sold and the differences between the Guide and the Sale prices realized. I could have tried the e-bay route but didn't want the hassle of the shipping of all the coins. For the amount of the Price paid to Teletrade it was well worth sending the coins there to liquidate. Great Job to Ian Russell and his group at Teletrade! Hope that this will help Homerun look at the Guide and do some major adjustments. For the coin buyers out there, still some great bargains to have if your looking to add to your registry collection. All the best to all on the Boards. Having FUN is what it is all about. Mike Long.

It takes them too long to change the price when a date and MM gets hot.

I collect all 20th century series except gold including those series that ended there.

In the history of numismatics, no price guide has ever been "right on". >>
I will go one step further and say that there is nothing that David Hall or anyone else can to do make everyone happy on this issue.
