COUNTERSTAMPED STONE MOUNTAIN HALVES

My dad just bought one of these OTC at our coin shop.I would grade
it an MS62.From what I understand, these are pretty scarce and hard
to find. Can someone explain how these were counterstamped and by
whom they were done by? Any information and imput on how these came
about and what the value of a BU would be worth would be greatly appre-
ciated by him and I.

different ones. The coin is being graded now and will be finalized any day now.I will let
everyone know when I get it back.
I am looking forward to finding out what the State, number, additional counterstamp (if any), and grade of this piece are.

Would they slab them if they were chop marked?

NGC will slab them as tokens, like this:

The valuation is not really something you would find in a price guide...I suppose a couple grand in a retail shop wouldn't suprise me for a problem free, mint-state piece.

Almost all are unique. There is a nice article in a late 80's edition of the Numismatist. I read that article, and found one at the very next show I went to.
There are a few known numbers (not state counterstamps) that there are mutiples of (like 3-4 pieces)
Last trade I saw for those was in the several hundred dollar range....but that was some time ago.
Let us know which one, and I'll look it up in the article.

This August 1987 article by Col. Adna Wilde is the most complete resource on the subject i have found to date.......With Col. Wilde's passing the foremost authority on the subject is probably Jim Harris
