Warning: Bogus 1970 bb & fb gai slabbed wax packs on ebay!

Over the last several months on ebay there has been a steady flow of bogus 1970 baseball & football Gai slabbed wax packs. All these bad packs are housed in Gai slabs with (not surprisingly) the newer generation label.

The illegitimacy of these packs is easily discerned as all contain the much smaller sized gum that was first used by Topps in 1980.

The gum Topps used in 1970 was twice the width of the '80's sized gum.

The bad Gai '70 football wax packs have been routinely listed on ebay over the past several months by the well known company Dave & Adams Cards. The bad Gai '70 baseball wax packs are being listed on ebay by various other sellers.

Several months ago a fellow board member did a live rip and opened one of these Gai '70 fb wax packs that he purchased from Dave & Adams. All the cards were laughable with obvious wear from handling. (not laughable for our fellow board member however).

I don't know how to post a link so I will give an ebay listing # of one each of these bad '70 bb & fb packs that are currently on ebay. The much smaller '80's era gum is easily seen in both.

1970 bb: 350273076710
1970 fb: 260501744109

For a look at the (correct) size gum used in 1970 here is the listing# of an authentic (PSA) 1970 bb wax pack currently on ebay. The gum is clearly twice the size in width as compared to the bogus Gai bb wax pack: 390114277604

I sent him a question about the gum being a little too small and said it seems to be a bogus reseal job. I await his response

  • "little too small" is a much to generous description. The particular piece of gum is his pack is less the 50% the size of the authentic 1970 sized gum--no comparison!

    Edited for spelling.

Well I said "It seems a little small, about half the size it should be."

  • As a kid I busted hundreds of 1968 thru 1970 wax packs and even today I can remember first hand how large the "wads" of gum were. They were twice as wide and they were also taller and thicker than the money saving, reduced sized gum Topps began using in 1980--the same gum being used in these bogus packs.

That's why I avoid anything that's not in a slab with a 1st generation flip.

  • Thanks for the link Robert. I have been watching people wasting their hard earned money on these bogus (expensive) packs for months now so I thought it wise to warn our fellow pack collecting members.

    brutal, very good to know
  • Summerof68, Thank you for this and all of your other detective work. I tend to avoid anything GAI except for the 1st generation stuff, and I probably wouldn't have seen that gum size in those pics.

Robert's link is to a '70 PSA pack, is that bad too, or is that an example of an ok one?

Looks like a good pack. Take a look at the width of the gum in the PSA pack ... it's wider than the one in the GAI pack.

  • Leftodial, thanks for the kind words. Yes, the PSA '70 bb wax pack in the picture is the real deal with the authentic wider piece of gum.

Robert linked the ebay listing# I provided in my original post to show fellow members the correct size gum used in a 1970 pack.

Could it be said that GAI is now as bad as Pro Grading? I'm not saying they are that bad, but if they're not, in my opinion they're heading in that direction.
