COUNTERSTAMPED STONE MOUNTAIN HALVES

My dad just bought one of these OTC at our coin shop.I would grade
it an MS62.From what I understand, these are pretty scarce and hard
to find. Can someone explain how these were counterstamped and by
whom they were done by? Any information and imput on how these came
about and what the value of a BU would be worth would be greatly appre-
ciated by him and I.

One of our members who goes by the name njcoincrank knows quite a bit about these and he has a few for sale, as well as information on them, on his website Numismatic Americana.

There's some information about those in this post, while you're waiting to hear from Bill. Out of curiosity, could you share the countermark (certain states are harder to find than others, and lower numbers are worth more than higher numbers)) and maybe a picture?

  • I don`t remember what the counterstamp was.Until now I wasn`t aware there were
different ones. The coin is being graded now and will be finalized any day now.I will let
everyone know when I get it back.

    Thanks guys!

I am looking forward to finding out what the State, number, additional counterstamp (if any), and grade of this piece are.

NGC will slab them as tokens, like this:

Nice pickup...I would love to get a hold of one, since I collect counterstamped coins. They are kind of expensive. What did you guys pay for it?...if you don't mind my asking.

The valuation is not really something you would find in a price guide...I suppose a couple grand in a retail shop wouldn't suprise me for a problem free, mint-state piece.

There are multiple states counterstamped Stn Mtns.

Almost all are unique. There is a nice article in a late 80's edition of the Numismatist. I read that article, and found one at the very next show I went to.

There are a few known numbers (not state counterstamps) that there are mutiples of (like 3-4 pieces)

Last trade I saw for those was in the several hundred dollar range....but that was some time ago.

Let us know which one, and I'll look it up in the article.

This August 1987 article by Col. Adna Wilde is the most complete resource on the subject i have found to date.......With Col. Wilde's passing the foremost authority on the subject is probably Jim Harris

Here is info on three I've acquired over the past few months:

S.C. 17 G.L. in gold bezel in problem free fine or so.
MISS 162 in problem free VF
N.C. U.D.C. 928 ex-jewelry (solder at 12:00 obverse) in damaged fine (someone tried to scratch out counterstamps).
