Given the paucity of other choices this year, I believe they will be VERY popular.

Price should drop by $50 on Thursday. Might be worth the wait.

The price of gold is set by faith, or lack of, in the currency it is priced in.

Or it might go up by $50, but it will most likely stay where it is.

I wonder if they will stop selling these 2009 dated coins once it is 2010. That is an important piece of the 'rarity' equation. How long are they available?

    I say this because:
You can still purchase an uncirculated 2008 ASE in a set (with 5 prezzie dollars for $37 total), and it's late in 2009.
The yearly uncirculated coin sets are sold well into the following year.

The platinum ounce goes on sale on 12/3. I wonder if it will be available only for 28 days?

Will they shift to 2010 dated coins in January?
  • I believe if they have them already made in '09, they will sell them until they are gone.

In the past the US Mint has continued to sell coins already made into the next year and sometimes this means several months into the next year.

We got an email from the Mint today informing us that the Proof gold Buffaloes would be available through our dealer bulk program after all, at effectively a 4% discount.

This was, of course, after we had already ordered ours at full price.

possible but not likely. check the pricing grid online. they should have just priced at $1310 last week instead of $1360. Unless gold explodes tues. & weds. it's likely going to stay at $1360. (or perhaps drop if gold doesn't rally enough??)

    $1,000.00 to $1,049.99 1 oz $1,310.00
    $1,050.00 to $1,099.99 1 oz $1,360.00
    $1,100.00 to $1,149.99 1 oz $1,410.00

Anything is possible. No one seriously thought the mint would cancel the SAE proofs or the fractional buffalos this year but they did.

  • I can tell you if the dealers can order proof buffaloes in bulk at a discount, my coins are going right back to the Mint.

You have to look at the authorizing legislation to know if the Mint can sell coins beyond the year in which they were minted. Some coins cannot be sold outside the year they were made. I think this is true for bullion SAEs, but I am not certain.

Why? You think dealers are going to price these at a less than 4% markup?

Has the mint ever sold coins with the exact same designs [mintmark] both through the website and dealer network? I am not sure people will be happy with the mint giving discounts that they don't give to the general public.

How hard would it be for the Mint to sell any product they make directly to the customer? Seems to me they are enriching the few (sorry authorized dealers, no offense, I don't blame you for making a buck). It doesn't seem like such a far stretch to set up a bullion fulfillment center close to West Point IMO. Who does the Mint work for?

Well they went on backorder on the mint website today. If they did mint them all using all available planchets - could be 30K mintage maybe or maybe not.
  • My cancel box disappeared relatively quick (1 day), I'm pretty amazed my CC was hit all ready too. The Mint doesn't play when it comes to gold. I have the in stock and reserved message.

order # 33329XXX if anyone is keeping track.

I put my order in yesterday. The charge was reserved against my credit card almost immediately, but now, 36 hours later, my card still hasn't been charged. The Mint website says "11/20" now, though.

I don't know and when I guess I feel stupid when often wrong so I will leave the "informed" thoughts to Eric regading the Mint and mintages......Cause he has been right so often (Thanks)!

Regardless of the mintage though, I believe this year will be a hit. Too few offerings elsewhere in the lineup; thus, all other waves look bigger.

I had a feeling something was up, so I waited one week, saw what gold was going to do and I went for it. I didn't want to come up short. The backorder dates are changing a bit too quick for my taste.
