Are the GSA plastic cases for silver dollars sealed?

GeomanGeoman Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭
Are the plastic cases that the GSA silver dollar enclosed in sealed? Or can they be opened and resealed?

Also, do you ever find circulated dollars in them? Or are they all uncirculated? Thanks!

The plastic cases are sealed. Assuming you're talking about the hard shell cases, I have never seen a circulated coin in one of them. They came straight from mint bags.

... can they be opened and resealed?

I don't know how to do it, but there must be a way.

I would also be on the lookout for fake coins in fake GSA holders. Not that I've heard of any, but it's only a matter of time.

I've seen empty GSA hard cases on Ebay. So, yes they can be unsealed and repackaged with
some other coin. I don't know how hard or easy but it can be done. The mixed catagory in
the hard cases was reserved for problem coins (toning, circulation, etc). So, yes you could find
circulated coins in the hard case (although I've personally never seen one).

  • There are two examples of circulated GSA dollars graded in the original black hard packs. They are both non-Carson City Morgans in the holders labeled "United States."

1879-P graded by NGC as XF45
1881-S graded by NGC as XF45

They are government sealed, but apparently not tamper-proof as others have posted in other threads on this forum.

Guidance has been provided by others to carefully examine (for evidence of tampering) the sealed edge of any expensive GSA Dollar that you purchase in an original US Government GSA Hard pack case. Caveat Emptor

It's the same holder they used for early Ike Proofs. They are hard plastic and sealed. (except the very early soft packs)

    Some say "uncirculated silver dollar"
Some say (considered rejects due to toning ) "Silver dollar"

Yes buyer beware, but there is not much to be gained from doing it. Most of the coins are several hundred bucks. A lot of raw Carson City Morgans would run that. Why rob a bank if you know there is just $200 bucks in the drawer?

Thanks for the info. I was meeting a guy that had 30+ of these he wanted to sell. I just got back from meeting him at the library, and I ended up buying 8 of them. The 8 I bought were some of the 82-CC's, 83-CC's and 84-CC's as he wanted to keep the better date ones. He did have multiplies of 1878-CC's, 1880-CC's and 1885-CC's as well, but kept all those for now. Most graded MS62 or MS63, with a couple of MS64's and MS61's. Pretty standard for those for what I read. I just wanted to make sure that I did buy a bunch of fakes.

One question that did arise was some of the cases said "Silver Dollar" near the bottom front and some said "Uncirculated Silver Dollar." To me, they all looked uncirculated. I am guessing that is just how the cases were made. Is that right?

GeoMan: Coal Porter has already anticipated and answered your question a few posts earlier in this thread.

The one GSA dollar that I have with full OGP that doesn't say "Uncirculated" has a little piece of paper saying that it was of a lesser grade and not considered uncirculated due to either tarnishing (It's toned) or excessive marks or scratches.

  • I have two that only say SILVER DOLLAR. One of them has an NGC sticker MS65 an 1883 CC. the other has not been graded.

7 others I just looked at say Uncirculated Silver Dollar.

They all look fantastic. No circulation on these 9 examples. I have read both versions of the GSA cards, and it doesn't make sense to me, but I don't care about the card.

Examples of both original gov't GSA cases. There are some BAD fake cases.
