Last weeks Chinese CC TRADE $$ off of ebay........
Bought this coin with the idea that it was a fake. Had a couple of others look at the auction and
nothing definitive (not real and not fake) before I made the buy.
You might ask why would anyone buy a coin from a Chinese seller off ebay? That's a good question
and deserves my answer. We do know that most of this series was shipped off to the Orient, both
China and Japan. Chinese coins have a bit larger chops but both country's merchants used chops
indicating that the coin was the right weight, and silver content (there were counterfeiters then too).
The coin, as I saw it, was suspect but dang good compared to others I've seen on ebay. So, used
my free (not really free) Ebay bucks and pulled the trigger. I promised I'd post the pics and here they
are along with another fake and a real one. The real one is in a PCGS slab.
Please read conclusion at the very bottom
Ok here's the fake:
as it was unpacked

unpacked front and back

here's the other fake front and back

and here's the real deal

fake diameter, real is supposed to be 38.1mm, way too thin, should be about 2.75mm

both are underweight at 27grams, should be 27.22 plus or minus .1 gram
Morgan on the scale to show scales accuracy, should be 26.7 grams

Now for the tells on the coins faces
Obverse IN GOD WE TRUST is just plain horrible on the fakes (if you put a ruler under the fakes the
letters are all over the place and not in a straight line)
Top coin is Fake
Middle coin is Real
Bottom coin is Fake
The Tops of the O's, E's and R's are missing on the fakes
These pics also show the dentils (easiest to spot on ebay)
The top fake is also thinly struck and the date just does not stick out like it should (relief)
The bottom fake has better dentils and the date is looking pretty good

On the reverse look carefully at E Pluribus Unum, fakes are not as distinct
Top coin is fake
Middle coin is real
Bottom coin is fake

two fakes side by side

difference in diameter with both the fakes

Conclusion:
Do you think I posted two fakes or only one fake and two real coins?????
Now that you have seen these coins do you think you could make a determination
from most ebay pics?
This tells me one absolute: The Chinese are reading these posts (or others like them)
and are getting much better.
I've been refunded my money by Ebay and am out nothing and will be sending this fake
coin to Tom (CaptHenway) should he desire for his next publication,
This was fun, sorry my pics are not the best but I hope you enjoyed just looking.
DON'T BUY ANY COINS FROM CHINA (unless it's for fun, education or you know what
the hell you are doing).

<< <i>This is great stuff Bob. Thanks very much for the education! >>
yes, I enjoyed it.
How did you get a refund and keep the coin?
I thought you must return it or I remember one of ebays rules said it must be destroyed.

I was going to say the same thing. If it is a fake,it would've fooled me.

Although the pictures aren't coming up because I am at work I will look at them later. If you asked anybody if it was real, you asked the wrong people. There are about 4 or 5 people on this board that pick those out at a near 100% rate. I for one begged you to start the charge back as soon as you bought it going as far as detailing the things that made it fake. I see it all the time a better then avg fake is up and once one person bites and bids others think well they must know what they are doing. Then people get enticed by the prospect of buying a coin for 25% of wholesale and end up not going with their gut.
Gave you a heads up hereFirst try
2nd try
plus a few PMs.
Also I would like to warn people that you cannot use any one spotting trick as these are made by hand and are like a silk screen shirt( no two are the same). Yes quality varies but the things that tip you off on one will give you a false sense of complacency on the next.

Actually, it sounds like a good way to get eBay to block Chinese sellers. Buy all the Chinese coins you can, and then do a chargeback when you get a fake. You'll be out nothing, the seller will be out shipping, and eBay will be out the administrative overhead and fees.
