if it were RAW
<< <i>he wouldnt have been able to pass them off if they were in the NGC prongs holders
Or the style of holder PCGS uses for the Presidential dollars but that really has little to do with the case since there are far more older style NGC Slabs out there than those 4 pronged monsters.
As long as older style slabs exist.......... then this problem is going to exist as it has nothing to do with what is being slabbed today.
The name is LEE!
.......gotta hope for a reputable seller.

Guessing the date from the reverse is a little tougher, but if you look at enough dollars that's no problen either. So the guy has a "1879-CC" that looks like a 1879-S obverse and looks like a 1882-CC reverse. When Thad Olsen from Spectrum first showed me the reverse he said, "Guess the date like the old days" and I guessed 1882-CC. He turned the coin over and I knew we had a problem. What was even funnier was the "1904-S." It had a very typical semi-PL 1904-O obverse and an 1879-S reverse. The problem of course is that the 1904-S should have the circa 1900-1904 "C4" reverse which looks totally different than the earlier reverses.
Bottom line for you all...you really need to know who you're dealing with. Stick with the established dealers and you shouldn't ever have this type of problem. By the way, seems like we see someone take a shot at the system every five years or so. First one was Gary Fernandez in 1989/90...$1.8 million in coins in phoney holders. He got 46 months in jail and we changed from the old rattlers to a more secure holder. Again...know who you're dealing with.

I know little about Morgans but can guess an IKE within 8 years!

HRH - Without looking at the coins, could you see that the holders had been tampered with? If so, how obvious was it?

<< <i>Genuine, common date Morgan dollars were split into two pieces (front and back along the rim), then adhered to each other in combinations to create the illusion of rare date and mintmarks. The coins then were placed in tampered PCGS holders...
