Raw cards?

Are raw cards worth the risk? would board members spend $1000.00 on a raw card . Why would a dealer not get it slabbed if he could make more $. Is there any legit raw dealers left?Would you take a chance on a raw Mantle,Palko,Mathews,Ruth,Cobb etc..

I'm a collector of raw cards, but I would never spend big money on a raw card. For me, big money is $150 or more. There are just too many risks involved when buying raw. Just because a seller doesn't get a card graded doesn't necessarily mean he's scandalous. The ones to watch out for are those that sell almost exclusively graded, then list a raw card as "Mint" or "Nm-mt." Those cards would likely be holdered if they truly were that nice.

There are many legit raw sellers. My favorite is "Mickey's Sportscards." You can also find several legit raw sellers on eBay, just proceed with caution.

    Too much risk there.

If I could see the card in person and be able to inspect it thoroughly than I would consider it. Just by a picture...no way!

For the big stars and #1 Pafko you mentioned, if a "legit raw dealer" is selling you a raw card for $1000, then it'll probably be worth right around $1000 after grading. If he's telling you the $1000 card he's selling will double or triple in value after grading, then he's not a legit raw seller.

At the $1 000 level probably not. For $100 to $500 it could be. A 52 Topps Pafko described as Ex, but only grade PSA 1 or 2. Depending on the reason for the low grade, a buyer might still not have a problem splitting the middle on the price

For a card with creases, rounded corners, pinhole, paper loss, etc, if it is a reputable dealer, you know what you're getting, so is it really taking a risk, even for a lot of money?

I would take a chance with those other guys that you mentioned, but there is no way that I would buy a Tyler Palko card unless it was slabbed.

    Who is Tyler Pafko???
  • There is a risk and reward to buying raw. Two weeks ago I purchased a 1953 Topps Mantle for $1100, after talking him down from $1400. It just popped today

I have been collecting since the late 50s on and off then went full blast in the mid 70s.Only cards available were raw and eventually I am selling everyone therefore no one will buy because they are raw?I do not know how many collectors on this board are 60 or better but it seems like we get a bad name because many of us do sell raw cards because that is all we had.I am definetly not a big time seller at this time however in the past I have sold mainly raw cards and sets from 1955 to 1980.I have had only one complaint and was on a 1958 Clemente YT that was trimmed which I was not aware of .I bought the card from a show dealer who I dealt with in the past.I refunded the buyer his money and had the card measured and I seen no difference in size.I made out OK as the buyer tried really throw me under the bus because he never expected me to refund him after him owning the card almost a year before sending it to PSA.When he sent me back the card he sent me a letter of apology for him slandering me plus a 1958 Hank Aaron low grade PSA YL.I in turn returned the card to the one that sold it to me and he as well refunded me no with no problem.
There are folks out there for sure that try to purposely decieve the buyer and then there are guys like me that we possibly may have a trimmed card unawre to us that we could sell however if we stand behind what we sell (Refund) we should not be put on a DO NOT BUY FROM HIM LIST.

Yes there are good raw card sellers out there and I would have to bet that the majority of them are oldsters like me.

The most I ever spent on a raw card was $50 for a Yaz RC. I overpaid. image

Every graded card was once raw. Sometimes you get lucky and get first crack at a dealers inventory before the cards get graded. If it's nice sometimes you will pay big money. Like the guy who just bought the 53 Mantle.

Far, far more likely for an in-person transaction than on ebay.

On ebay, my tolerance is like $200 (for a single card) with good scans. $75 or so with a mediocre scan/pic.

Id only buy Raw if I could. Slabbed cards are overrated and over priced. And I end up cracking many out anyhow.

    PS.
$1000 just cause a card is #1 in a set??? image stupidest thing in this hobby

The '52 Pafko and the R319 ('33 Goudey) Bengough in less than NRMT........... are the most overrated cards in the hobby! (besides the '52T Mantle)

The premium is ONLY because of the higher chance a #1 will receive wear in the shoebox they were stored in (or rubber banded). Why are you clowns paying a premium for a #1 card in EX or VG??? Makes no sense. its a common.
