The Morgan and Peace Dollars are known for many different varieties, called VAMs. An extensive research on the variations in the dies used to strike silver dollars was published many years ago by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis. Their work centers on Morgan dollars that were minted by the United States Mint from 1878 through 1904 and the resumed again in 1921 and Peace Dollars issued from 1921 through 1935. The term VAM is an acronym for "Van Allen - Mallis."
