Here's the 29-year old non coin dealer personality talking...

People should always find a way to turn a bad situation into one that is ultimately good for you. Dealers who think they can grade coins well but in reality can't can have their overconfidence exploited. Next time bring in a few AU or slider coins and offer them for sale by convincing the storekeep that they are actually uncs. If he bites then good. If he tries to convince you they are au's then use your coins and compare them to his coins.

Even if the storekeep doesn't bite at least you have a strong argument that points out their moments of hypocrisy and inconsistencies.

Also remember to not get too emotional or lose your temper during situations like this. Emotions can interfere with good judgement and creativity.

Lot's of good perspectives brought up in this thread.

Good advice for coin shop visits and worth remembering in work-a-day life in general I would say WTCG.

<< <i>Walking into a new coin store for the first time is a crap shot at best. Most of the smaller coin shops i have been in are a "clickish"group. They do not like newbies to their store coming in except to sell. >>

Eight coin shops within a twenty mile radius and I definitely feel this vibe in the majority pennyannie.

<< <i>I've always attributed the less-than-positive attitudes on the nature of the business. A certain amount of appraisal of the new and unfamiliar person walking in the door is simply a survival mechanism - robbery, shoplifting and other concerns taking precedence over immediate acceptance. >>

There's prolly more than a bit of truth to that BlindedByEgo.

I think that personality disorders are over-represented in solo retail businesses.

I kind of liked his question about the gold. Especially nice crusty pieces. Way more exciting.

Did you ever ask a price for the junk?

Maybe he would have priced it at your grade.

At the end of the day it's the pirce not the grade. UNderstand the guy had no tact, but maybe you could have bought a bunch of junk from him.

Remember coin shop dealers are fiercly independent folks by nature and the longer theyh've been in business the more likely they don't care about TPG's. If they don;t have many slabs that's a good hint they don't care.

    Anyhow, you tried.
