If you're not a professional writer - then you should consider changing careers! Great read..and I can totally relate. I CONSTANTLY push up against my self-imposed spending limits and even have a low balance "slush fund" credit card that I keep a small balance on for cards that I can't entirely afford at the moment. Of course, my wife has no idea the cc exists and for good reason!

So we have a winner. Kind of. Technically if you read the rules you were supposed to "GUESS" the winning time but I didn't really think you all would go Colombo on this and do the research. But, you did. Damn you guys are good. Can any of you get me the phone number of my high school sweetheart? I feel the need for a booty call. Anyway, the first in with the closest answer was DamageINC. PM me your address and the T206 prize is on the way. You were not exactly right but you were close. I was looking for the clock time but they were off by only a second. Had somebody guessed 6:19:28 I would have had to give the prize to them. But they didn't so you win. However, Oaksey stuck to the spirit of the game and came up with a guess that was about 12 minutes off of my finish time. Oaksey, send me a list of your interests and your address and I'll find something else to send your way.
Congrats to all who played. I will have another contest in a few days which will take the google experts a bit more time and there won't be any prizes for finishing first so everybody has an equal chance.

Some scans from tonight's work. T222's. A real tough set of 52 cards. Very brittle like the T200's. I've got 37 of them in PSA slabs now with a few that PSA wont grade because the damage is just too much. So I look for better copies.

Selling some cards seems like an obvious option but to tell the truth I just can't do it. Everything I've shown so far is the only example I have of the card. I started all these sets because I really wanted to have them. Selling them now would mean I would just need to buy them again later. I do have about 300 graded duplicates which I will eventually sell. Many are from the 1941 Goudey set and I'm hoarding those so they won't move. But I've got some real nice dupes that will eventually go to financing something special. Like Felicia's T206 Magie error or something like that.
Some day I'll move some cards. Probably the day after I get laid off. But in the mean time I just keep acquiring. At least until now. Now I am must enjoying. I hope you are as well.

Ouch. Well, as I write this it's only the bottom of the 8th. We still have 3 more outs so anything is possible? Sure. 11-0 but only 2-1 in the series. Here we go again. Tomorrow becomes a must win game. The 2nd in the series already. Things are not looking good but I'm glad we have Wolf on the hill tomorrow. He's been solid all year. Blanton doesn't scare so we've got a chance to even this up 2-2. Pitching has to be better though. Today was completely awful. Game 1 there were only 2 bad innings but they were really bad. Damn I need a win tomorrow.
OK, lots of scanning today but nothing real memorable so I won't waste a post to load scans. Two of my favorite players as a kid were Steve Garvey and Steve Yeager. I've got about 90 cadrs from these guys career and they were scanned and posted to the player sets today. One of the things I really like about player sets is the variety of cards you get to collect. The Garvey set has over 200 different cards from about 200 different sets. That's pretty cool. There was discussion on another thread about "type" sets. I started the Garvey set as a way to basically collect a type set from 1971-1987. I planned on doing a Mark Grace set to pick it up from 1987 to the 2000's but it wasn't in the system and I didn't feel like starting it myself. I did submit requests with PSA to start a T206 Brooklyn team set. I also requested a T type sampler set. We'll see how long those take to get going. The T card set will be very tough with some real high dollar cards in it but I'll put the cards in my want lists and be looking at the National in Baltimore next year.

I'm sure as a batter or fielder they too would prefer the 2 - 1 loss.
11 - 0 is ugly.
Steve >>
After the fact, I would much prefer the 11-0 loss. Baseball does not use the aggregate scoring playoff system; as a result, the team can start anew the next game.
Milestone day today. After some issues with the sender I received my last pre-celibacy package. So, from here on out I'm out of luck. No more little packets of goodness will be waiting in my mailbox for quite a while. In normal circumstances this would be cause for concern. At present though I think I have enough diversions to keep my focus away from ebay for a couple of days at least. If the Dodgers can hold on to the lead tonight I will have baseball to watch until at least Friday. Sherrill is in to pitch the bottom of the 8th. He has been money so far this year but Ibanez took him deep in game 1. Hopefully he can find his groove so Broxton can try to slam the door in the 9th. This thread will probably include play-by-play of the bottom of the 8th...
1 out. Nice to see Blake keep Rollins off the bases. Now we need to get Victorino real bad.
So, in addition to baseball I've been scanning cards like crazy. Today is the 8th day of scanning and I've managed to get nearly 450 cards scanned and uploaded into my psa registry. Today I scanned my 1948 Bowman Baseball set. I'll attach some scans at the bottom of this post. So far I've been focusing on the smaller sets which puts a lot of little cameras in my registry list and looks impressive but the lion's share of what I need to scan still remains. Nearly 1200 cards remain for my registry primarly from the 1952-1953-1954 Topps sets. It's going to take nearly a week per set to get through that range. The race now is to see whether I will get the scanning done within this month. Probably not but the completion of the scanning could provide a nice new milestone for initiating buying again.
Damn, Victorino sure tried REAL hard to avoid that pitch and is now on first base. Utley and Howard will be the last two hitters for Sherrill. If it gets to Werth then Broxton will come in.
So, scanning is going to take me well past the end of the World Series which means I will probably slow down as I near the end. That will drag things out a while. I am enjoying the opportunity to re-visit my collection but it's not the most exciting activity. If I wasn't focusing on my scanner though I'd probably be screaming at the TV.
OK, here are some scans while Utley walks down to first base, Torre talks to Sherrill, Howard comes to the plate and I die a little death.
Wow. Howard down on strikes. Broxton should be on his way to face Werth.

My thoughts on losing 11-0 versus losing 2-1. In my opinion, as a team and as a manager it is better to lose 11-0 than 2-1 because you can then set your team up better for the next game. In a best of 7 series it's not about winning each game. It's about winning 4 games. You can lose 3 and still advance. You can give those games away if you play well enough in the games you win. The key though is to not let it become a habit. Had the Dodgers fallen behind 4-0 again tonight things would begin to look very grim. As it is they did fall behind but Wolf found his stride and shut down the Phils until LA could get some offense going. Losing tonight though would probably seal the deal.
Bottom 8th, Broxton blowing it by Werth so far. 1 strike to go... Damn I sure like Werth as a Dodger...
GOT HIM!!!
OK, time for some insurance then the 6-7-8 hitters.
Whew...

Ugh. 21 years without a title. At least I'm not a Cubs fan.
So, after having lost the last two games 5-4 and 10-4 I can say that from my perspective losing big is much easier than losing a heartbreaker. Tonight was basically an 8-1/2 inning display of what the Dodgers need to work on for next year. Defense is fine. Offense is fine but there are some concerns. Pitching is an issue. Not a big issue but still the missing piece was evident tonight. They need a slam the door, #1 starter. Kershaw may become that guy. Billingsly may become that guy. But these guys are still very young and feeling their way through their development. A top shelf starter could accelerate their development and add some teeth to the staff. Tonight they used about half the staff and every single guy was choking hard. Gripping the ball too tight, over throwing. 3 hit batters, walks, wild pitches. Very ugly pitching performances in Games 3 and 5. Sherrill was useless in this series. His performance in games 1 and 4 probably cost those games. I have faith he can come back but they need a Bulldog on that staff to kick that team in gear.
Next year the bullpen looks solid again. Everybody of significance is back (Broxton, Sherrill, Kuo, Belisario and Troncoso). The last two spots could go to a kid or a vet. Returning starting pitching includes Kershaw, Billingsley and Kuroda. Padilla, Wolf and Garland are Free Agents. I'd like to re-sign one of those guys and pick up a stud pitcher. Unfortunately the free agent market looks pretty thin. John Lackey is about the best name I see on the list of 2010 free agent Starting Pitchers. Roy Halladay appears to be the one guy who has been dangled out there that could come up again in a trade. He won't come cheap but there are enough high level prospects that the Blue Jays should be interested in to make a deal work. They won't be getting Kershaw, Ethier, Kemp or Broxton in a deal but there are pieces we can work with I think especially some young pitchers. Re-signing Halladay shouldn't be an issue since the Jason Schmidt and Andrew Jones contracts are now off the books. We need an ace arm on the staff though.
Offense has some questions. Etheir and Kemp should be no worse next year which bodes well. Ramirez should be back but I expect a drop in production next year as well. I wish he would opt out but he would be an idiot to give LA back the $20 million he is signed to. Nobody else will give him close to that. Martin and Furcal were disappointments but Furcal should be better the 2nd year after back surgery. Martin is too good to give up on after one season. Besides there is nobody in the wings and no better free agents. Loney is an interesting problem. His defense, average and RBI's are good enough. He has no power though. The 2nd half was a lot better than the first so maybe next year will be the year he finally hits 20 HR's. Casey Blake is Casey Blake. A nice player but nothing special. He has 2 more years on his deal so I don't expect a change there. 2nd base is wide open. Both Belliard and Hudson are free agents. I doubt Hudson will come back but I hope he will. I think Torre made a mistake pulling him out of the lineup in the post season. With out his spark the team struggled to generate runs. They became a team waiting for the 3 run home run that never came. But, if Belliard is the guy for next year then that will be OK. We lose the speed at the top of the lineup and the defense but he hit well enough. I don't see Blake DeWitt being in the mix for the job. Chone Figgens would be a real nice option if he can be lured away from the Angels. He's more than capable of playing the position and adds speed to the lineup.
The bench will be pieced together similar to how it was this year. A couple of guys and a couple of pinch hitting specialists. Thome will not be one of them. Loretta and Mentkiewicz could be back. They probably drop Brad Ausmus and go with either AJ Ellis or an outsider as backup catcher. I think they want somebody who can catch more games next year. Then again I say that every year. Martin will probably still play 145-150 games in 2010.
Bigger questions though are who will manage the team? Torre has said he will be back in 2010 but there is obviously a lot of tension between Joe and Management. I could see something worked out where he ends up out of LA. No idea where they go next. Isn't Bobby Valentine coming back to the states in 2010? That is just the type of move the team would make and I don't see it being a great move.
All of this is also thrown into the air because of the pending McCourt divorce. Will ownership be willing and able to put money into the franchise or will they go cheap to save ready cash? I hope they spend some money.
So, basically they need a stud starting pitcher and a 2nd baseman with speed. Torre's situation needs to be resolved very early in the offseason. They will never openly say the divorce is impacting the product on the field so we will have to read between the lines and see if they sign some guys.

I'm experiencing some unexpected side effects of my month long self-imposed banishment from the ebay community. In general these are positive events but I wonder about the long term impact. I'm finding that I am transferring my addiction from one on-line activity to another. While I am no longer spending countless hours on ebay searching out that ultimate deal I am spending my time in other activities. One positive is I am becomming better digitally organized. My computers have been difficult to navigate through when looking for various photo, video and music files. So, I've been working to clean things up. I purged out tons of duplication so far and am now getting rid of some crap that never should have been there in the first place. This will take some more time but in the end I will be pleased with the result.
I have also "discovered" facebook. I've had an account for years but never spent any time there. Friends requests built up. My profile was unimproved. Nothing was happening. I find this to be very humorous based on some comments after you guys went out and googled my LA Marathon results. I had no idea how much information was out there for those who were properly motivated. I jokingly commented I needed somebody to track down my ex-high school girlfriend so I could make a booty call. Well, I'd been looking for her for years but with name changes it was difficult for me. What an idiot I was. I improved my facebook page, liked up to my high school alumni page and 2 of the 3 girls I had been looking for found ME within 24 hours. So, all is good. I'm no longer planning any assignations though. In the last 25 years these women got OLD. Which is surprising since I still feel 18. But, we are catching up. Good times. That 3rd girl remains unfound and I'll have to try some other approaches to make that connection.
When I'm not scanning facebook for hotties I've been keeping up with the scanning. This week's accomplishment: 1961 Fleer Basketball. Attached are a few highlites. The rest of the set (minus the two cards I still need) is available through the link at the bottom of this post. Enjoy.

After the fact, I would much prefer the 11-0 loss. Baseball does not use the aggregate scoring playoff system; as a result, the team can start anew the next game.

Bottom 8th, Broxton blowing it by Werth so far. 1 strike to go... Damn I sure like Werth as a Dodger...
GOT HIM!!!
OK, time for some insurance then the 6-7-8 hitters.

<< <i>My thoughts on losing 11-0 versus losing 2-1.

Sigh. A tough loss for the Dodgers.

They will never openly say the divorce is impacting the product on the field so we will have to read between the lines and see if they sign some guys.

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.
looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started
Enjoy.
