Seriously, your writing is fantastic. I look forward to your next posts. I too, am going to get my wife to read what you wrote. I agree with one of the above posters, you should put your writing up so more can see it.... but then again, you must have a pretty good job already to be buying what you are buying. image

This is an interesting thread. Last November, my computer went blewie and I was without the internet for over 35 days which means no purchases for 35 days. I spent the time doing other productive things and I put down about $700 on the ole credit card to almost pay the thing off. Whenever I had to do something with cards, I started self grading my 1983-1986 star basketball set and putting stickers on the backs with my own grades. Your best bet is to not even pull up ebay for a month. I would also suggest not even logging on to the net for those 30 days. It is alot more painless than you would think.

I didn't write essays in my microeconomics class as long as this post. However I have to say this is tens times more interesting than microecon - although macro econ was cool. Yeah right.

    "Molon Labe"

  • There have been suggestions that I give up the internet completely or at least ebay for these 30 days. Sorry. Not going to happen. There was a Internet Addiction Quiz on Page 1 of this thread. I scored myself in the mid to high 40's which is far from an addiction. So, the internet is not a significant problem in my life. Plust, to me that is kinda like giving up cigarettes and drinking at the same time. One is a challenge. Two is more than twice as hard. In addition I would likely fail one of the challenges. Having failed at one I would probably give them both up together and end up achieving nothing. So, for now I will take baby steps. 30 days of no card buying. Succeed at this and then attempt a more significant challenge. Maybe give up porn? Well, let's not get crazy here.

So with no incentive to search ebay for bargains I am finding that I have more time on my hands. Today was spent in the typical Kids Sports fashion but I also had time to go for a run, do some yardwork and finish up some winter prep work that I had been putting off. Time well spent that I hope to keep up when my period of celibacy is over. I have also started my long desired project of scanning my graded card collection. I've scanned the T206's which got me in this mess, at least the PSA graded ones, and posted them in my PSA set. For those interested in seeing my take you can view them here:

    My T206 Set

At the rate I am going it will take me 6 months to get everything scanned but this does give me the opportunity to re-discover my collection. But with winter coming I should have more time in the evenings to dedicate to the project. I'll post some scans into this thread.

    I'm a SO-Cal guy and I wouldn't mind seeing a Freeway Series - Dodgers vs. Angels!
  • Phillies and Yankees standing in the way of a Freeway series. Personally I'd rather face the Yankees because I think the Angels are tougher to beat. But an all SO Cal World Series would be amazing. I just wish I could be back there if it happened. But, as long as the Dodgers take down the Phillies I'll be satisfied for now. Thursday gets it started. Both teams will be well rested and ready to go. Let's get it on fella's.

Damn, I forgot there was no mail service today. All work and no play made for a tough day. Spent some time scanning after the ballgame so I got some more to show off. The partial sets I scanned are here:

    T207
    1933 DeLong
    1933 Goudey
    1934 Goudey

Here are some highlites for those who don't want to dig around. I hope to some day finish up a Goudey run to go with my 1941 Goudey Set. Also the 1933 DeLong's are just a really nice little set. Tons of hall of famers including the Gehrig shown. The T207 was an earlier attempt to finish up an old tobacco set that wasn't to daunting. Guess I should have kept that set going. I would have picked up nearly half a T207 set already. No problem though it will sit aside until I'm ready.

  • After two days without any mail I'm in a foul mood. Plus no baseball tonight to distract. So today I'm going to rant about the SMR Magazine. In my opinion this "magazine" is rarely even remotely readable. The articles are poorly written, the content generally unappealing and the information presented is not appropriate for the magazine's audience. Based on the earliest comments in this thread there are quite a few people who agree. But why should we be disappointed? We don't pay for the magazine, it comes free with our PSA membership. I suppose we'd all like the SMR to be a bastion of hobby knowledge. Something like Old Cardboard, The Trader Speaks, The Wrapper or even Tuff Stuff for those who collect modern issues. That however is not PSA's purpose. For PSA the magazine provides a means for advertisers to reach the public. IT IS AN ADVERTISING TOOL!! That's it. The articles provide the appearance of journalistic intent but it's really not much more than a 100 page infomercial. Tons of ads, page after page of prices which are dubious at best and 3-4 articles which expound the virtues of PSA why we all should have our collections encapsulated. Ocasionally the auction houses take a couple of pages to describe some amazing "find" which you can bid on in the near future or report the results of their latest auction, highlighting the amazing prices for PSA graded material. Generally it is little more than drivel apparently written by summer interns.

Discounting PSA's lack of intent, here are my main issues with the articles.

    1. They are dull, dull, dull. The content does little to educate the public on the topic. There was an article a couple months ago about the T206 set somebody rich is building. This is a set with no limits on what information you can present. Instead we had paragraphs about this guy's porceline collection. And it turns out the "owner" of the cards cares nothing for them, rather he is financing this opportunity as a "father-son" bonding activity. The father's involvement appears to stop when the bill is paid. Rather than rooting for them the article just made me want to vomit.

    2. The articles are not appropriate for the readers. Hey PSA members. I bet you didn't know that low pop cards sell for a premium price. Or, did you know that the first card in a set often sells for more than other commons? How about the last card? Same thing it turns out!! Something about rubber bands damaging the cards. These little gems of information are presented multiple times in just about every issue of the magazine. Did you know that the placement on a sheet can often affect whether a card is off-center? Now they won't explain WHY this is but I bet you will read that statement next month as well. It came up again in the 1975 Topps Football set article this month. Look PSA, we know this. In general PSA members are knowledgable about the hobby. We know these basics. We may not know why the 1980's cards can sometimes be found with yellow names but we know this. Now, if you want to write an informative article write about the 1990 Thomas NNOF. One of our board members has a solid theory on why this variation occurs and has speculated and then PROVEN THE EXISTENCE of other variations to support his theory. THIS is what I would like to see in the SMR. Expand and communicate the knowledge of those participating in the hobby.

    3. Enough with the population numbers already. How many times do I have to skip through sections of an article telling me there are 2 PSA 10's, 12 PSA 9's and 27 PSA 8's of a given card? Do I really care? Now, in some cases this may be interesting. The 1967 Philadelphia set has a single card which has NEVER graded above a PSA 7. I'd like to hear this with a theory on why. Mind numbing articles on ebay prices and PSA pop reports provide no lasting information that I can hold on to.

    4. Does your art department read the article they are documenting? You can't believe how frustrating it is to read an article and have a quote from a collector such describing a card as "beautiful" or "unique photography" and then not be able to find a photo of the card in the article. This happens time and time again. The photos should support the article or the article should support the photos. They do not stand alone.

As an advertising tool the magazine falls well short of it's mark with collectors. In my opinion though the CALENDAR is a work of art. I look forward to the calendar every year and have it hanging in my office at work. Every week day I stare at this calendar and look at the items being presented and start to think, "Damn, that is a nice looking set. I wonder what it would take to collect that." On multiple occasions I have started a set just because it was in the calendar. THIS is marketing. This has caused PSA sales to increase because I have expanded my buying . Make the magazine more like the calendar. Make me want to collect the magazine. Make me want to own the cards inside. Stop making me want to vomit.

Good luck Goudey, I took a few months off to pursue a few other ventures, and came back to what??? A 1915 Cracker Jack Rabbit Maranville in PSA 4, I had to have it, but still needed to send a $1000 (cost) submission out. I realized I had a problem, unlinked my credit card from the paypal account, and will now only pay sellers with a check, or with funds already in the paypal account. It may sound like extreme measures but I realized there is no other way for me to accomplish setting spending limits. Now I am only buying after my PSA submission comes back or I sell some stuff, things just got way out of hand!

This story also started out with the appearance of journalistic intent, but it's starting to look like it's a 100 page infomercial for a leaving the hobby sale.
  • I say, with your writing expertise which has been made apparent by this thread, maybe you should start a magazine yourself that would focus on prewar and post war sets that would cut off at 1982. It would be cool for each issue to have an in depth look at a particular set.

Interesting observation. After thinking it through I can see why you could come to that conclusion. I have no intent on leaving the hobby, ever, and nothing I have shown is available for sale. I'm a collector not a seller, that's how I got into this position. I do have cards which are available but have never actively marketed them and do not intend on doing so through this thread. However, to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest I will allow anybody who is following this thread to chime in with their opinion. Should I continue to include scans of my collection in this thread? I will continue to scan my cards but will leave the inclusion in this thread to the democratic process. Let me know if you want to see scans. I've got some cards I want to show off but they can be seen by visiting my set page on the registry.

Do I include scans? Do you feel I am setting you up for a money grab? Let me know. Scans on hold for now.

  • We want witty comments to your scans.

Like "This PSA 5 (which looks like a 4) sold for PSA 6 price because me and another T206 collector ignore the VCP."

Or "I think I visited a Piedmont in NC."

OK, not great examples, but no one has paid me to write anything in over a year.

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • Hey GoudeyGuy,
That's a nice worded rant if you ask me :-) If you haven't read Scot Reader's book on the T206 set, you should check it out. Though you seem very knowledgeable already, it will certainly help feed your addiction. It's available a number of places (we don't have it posted at the moment) - but here's the direct link to the pdf via Old Cardboard.
  • OK,

Scans are in. Comments will be added as I can come up with them.

The T202 has two pinholes near the bottom of the center panel. The PSA 1 was expected. Other than that it is a very nice specimen.

The 1951 CMAS Lou Gehrig was a surprise. I've been over that card a couple times and can not find the mark which earned the MK qualifier. At some point I will get a loupe and find that mark. If I can't find it I will resubmit and see if PSA can find it again. I'd much rather that card in a PSA 3 than a PSA 3MK holder.

You may not believe this but I actually have a link to this article saved as a Favorite in my web browser. The version I link to was updated in 2009 and is called the Centenial Edition. Scot included some updates from the last three years.

    Here is the new link:

    Inside T206 Centenial Edition

This article is a fantastic source of information for anybody who wants to learn more about this set. Be forewarned though. This set is adictive. It is very large but can be sliced and diced into pieces that just about any collector can handle. So, if you choose to follow the link do so at your own risk.

I just wanted to say that you suck, GoudeyGuy. image I had thought about picking up a few T206s here and there. But then I started to think about them more after I read your posts and you posted some scans. And then you and cardpricer had to go and post links to the T206 guide. Now I am hooked and have found another passion for my collection and I haven't even bought 1 T206 yet! So thanks a lot! You have contributed to my downfall! Soon I'm going to be writing a similar post about how I've lost my house because I'm obsessed with 100 year old cardboard (I really hope I'm kidding here image)!

So, if anyone has any CHEAP T206 cards for sale please let me know. Missing paper and writing on the back is okay (and preferred if it makes it considerably cheaper image) but the front should look good for the grade and be decently centered. I'm also interested in a reprint set if anyone has a CHEAP one.

Well you can't say you weren't warned. I certainly understand your thought process though. The set is very addictive and it is easy to get caught up in it. At least for me. As for your quest, early posts in this thread suggest budgeting to restrain expenditures. In this case however I suggest budgeting along with creating an appropriate scope. This set can easily run you $30-$40k in a PSA 3-4 range and that doesn't include the big 4. So, if collecting the entire set is outside your budget then you will need to focus. A Brooklyn team set in PSA 2 will be under $1k. I haven't looked at other team sets but except for Detroit (Ty Cobb), Cleveland (Cy Young), St. Louis (Demmit and O'Hara) and maybe Washington (Walter Johnson) you should be able to collect those team sets for a similar price as well.

As for a first T206 I have two extras. a PSA 3 MC and a SGC 30. I'm thinking about having a couple of contests to give them away so keep your eye on the thread. The first card contest should come up tonight. However, you can pick up a card or two with back damage fairly easily. And don't worry, if things get out of hand you always have your friends here to lend support.

I'm going to go for a low-grade raw set. I think I'm going to go the route of building team sets. St. Louis (NL) will be first (minus Demmit and O'Hara which will have to be reprints for now), followed by Brooklyn. When I get a team set done I am going to make a wall display out of them. I doubt I ever get the full set (I'm just worried about the different backs, YET image) but it would be neat to have all of the different team sets all with their own display. One can dream, anyway. image

I haven't actually had enough time to plan something out but my initial thought was some custom matte work that arranged the cards around the team logo from the time period. Right now I'm working on a Roy Campanella display that I find really hard to explain for some reason. But I'll be sure and post pictures when it's done.

too many scans of vintage baseball cards is not enough image
  • Well, I have now survived my first week on the wagon. I'm still receiving packages so it has not been as hard as I expected. There are two more out there somewhere which I expect to arrive shortly. After those last two cards show up I'm out of luck with new cards for my collection. But I am diving into my collection to do the scanning so I actually have more cards out and about than I would typically. I am taking the time to enjoy what I already have and share some of that with anybody interested.

Last night I took the night off though. No scanning, no cards, no posting. Family activities ruled the evening plus my normal computer was unavailable. So, rather than fight the situation I took the opportunity to watch some TV and get some sleep. An evening well spent. Tonight I dig back into scanning as I find it a great activity while watching playoff baseball. Dodgers and Phillies kick things off around 8PM EST so after a trip to they gym I'll be sitting down, eating some dinner and scanning cards. Should be a large stack of scans tonight.

I have two "extra" T206's which I will be giving away through this thread. The first will come up in a contest tonight. I planned on launching it last night but that didn't happen. I know how I'm going to give the first card away. The second though is up in the air. That probably won't happen until later in the month. Keep your eye on the thread title, I'll let you know when the contests are on.

    Take care all.

  • OK,

We're having a contest. To the winner is an original T206 card. Ed Abbaticchio, Blue Sleeves PSA 3 MC. The first card in the set (alphabetically) and the card that started the whole thing for me. The contest will be fairly simple requiring more logic and luck than skill or card knowledge. So, let the games begin...

In the initial post I mentioned that The Monster is a marathon, not a sprint. Well, The Monster is not my first marathon. I ran an actual marathon a couple of years ago. 26.2 miles. The winner of the card will be the person who can come closest to guessing my time to cross the finish line. A couple of hints. I've only run the one marathon. I may try again someday but it took a lot of willpower to get across the line. So, guesses in the sub 3 hour range are appreciated but wrong. My training for the marathon was not very intense. Basically this was my routine:

    1. Fill out the application
    2. Get up off the couch on race day
    3. Run...walk...run...walk...walk...crawl...die...crawl...walk...smile for the camera

Speeking of dying, two runners did die that morning so that is an unfortunate choice of words. Sorry

Good luck. Bids will be accepted until the final out is recorded in the LA Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies game 2 on Friday night. I will announce the winner late Friday or Saturday.

Here is the card and here is the photo of the finish line. Guess the time on the clock above my head and enjoy your new T206. Hopefully a T206 virgin will win the prize.

Rules: 1 guess per member. Editing your guess is fine but when the last out is recorded in Game 2, all guesses are final. Any editing after the last out is recorded nullifies your entry. In the event of a tie, earliest guess takes the prize. In the event of an unpredicted issue I will decide the winner. It's my contest, if you have a problem with that don't enter.
