My new auto project, 1981 Donruss Golf Set ALL DONE, PROJECT COMPLETE :)
Since I completed my 5 HOF signed card, I needed a new autograph project to work on while I'm always working on my signed rookie card collection. I decided to try my hand at the 1981 Donruss Golf set as it's small sized and most of the guys are still around, and golfers tend to be great signers compared to other sports.
I've gotten a pretty good startup, here is who I have already:
Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Curtis Strange, Andy Bean, Ben Crenshaw, Jerry Pate, Craig Stadler, Ray Floyd, Larry Nelson, Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Lietzke, Doug Tewell, Don Pooley, Bob Gilder, Tom Kite, Leonard Thompson, Peter Jacobsen, Gil Morgan, Tom Purtzer, Jay Haas, Hale Irwin, Mark Lye, Dan Pohl, Fuzzy Zoeller, Dan Pohl Stat Leader, Lee Trevino Stat Leader, Tom Watson Stat Leader, George Burns, Bill Kratzert, Jeff Mitchell, Gibby Gilbert, Jack Newton, Ed Fiori, Jack Renner, Howard Twitty, Bill Rogers, David Graham, Dave Eichelberger, Mike Sullivan, Lanny Wadkins, Bob Murphy, Wayne Levi, Keith Fergus, Lon Hinkle, John Mahaffey, Scott Simpson, Mike Reid, Phil Hanc&ck, Tom Weiskopf, Dan Halldorson, Jim Colbert, Hubert Green, Calvin Peete, Johnny Miller, George Archer, George Cadle, Charles Coody, Danny Edwards, Terry Diehl, DA Weibring, J.C. Snead, Jerry Pate Stat Leader, Jack Nicklaus Stat Leader, Ed Sneed, Jim Simons
The ones I still need are:
NONE, I'M FINISHED
Does anyone know if any of the guys that I haven't got yet will pose a particular problem? In other words, are they dead, refuse to sign, hard to find, etc.
If anyone has one or more of the ones I need available, just let me know if you want to sell and if you'll sell for a reasonable price. I know there are a lot on ebay, but I'm not paying the $10-12 per card for the common people like that seller is asking. I've only spent on average about $4 a piece for the ones I have so far (except for Nicklaus). I do have an extra Nicklaus, but I'd have to get a LOT of the common guys that I don't have yet in exchange if someone wanted to trade, or I'd probably trade for the Nicklaus Stat Leader as well

Oh, and on second viewing, Jim Colbert and Johnny Miller do not sign TTM. Johnny is great in person but you can really only see him at tournaments that NBC covers.

Hi Neil,
I appreciate the thought, but I have all the unsigned ones already. I'm just working on a signed set. Good luck with your pack! Hope you get a Nicklaus '10'.
Mike
you seem to never give up till your goal is complete....a collectors collector!
congrats

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>Mike ... are any of the 15 that you need very difficult? Any deceased players where you have to buy one already signed? It will be nice to get a complete set. >>
Supposedly Miller won't sign TTM. I'm trying anyway. Simons and Archer are dead so I'll have to find those already signed. I've got a lead on an Archer, I just have to be patient with the seller and I'll probably end up with it.

<< <i>I bought this one off of ebay tonight. I've currently got a TTM request out to him right now, but when I checked Sportscollectors.net , I realized that no one has reported a success there for him since 2005 so I decided not to hold my breathe on my TTM request and to go ahead and buy one for my set.
Mike, I've had TTM success with him twice since them. They should come back eventually.

Jim Simons, Ed Sneed, JC Snead, Jack Nicklaus Stat Leader, Jerry Pate Stat Leader.
If you've got any of these cheap, let me know. 3 of them are relatively easy TTM, Sneed, Snead, and Jerry Pate, I'm just not patient
Simons is deceased and Nicklaus is obtainable TTM, just have to time it right.

<< <i>It absolutely amazes me how quickly you have gotten to the end, better start thinking about your next project! >>
Doran,
I've got another project that I'm about to start as soon as the base set I'm using for it gets here from my ebay purchase. I'll post my thread once I start
Mike
J.C. Snead
Now, I only need 4 more:
Jack Nicklaus Stat Leader, Jerry Pate Stat Leader, Ed Sneed, and Jim Simons (deceased)
Only need 3 more, Jack Nicklaus Stat Leader, Ed Sneed, and Jim Simons (deceased).
Plus, I'll be sending the checklist to former PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman (he was commish during the set's release) to try and get him on that. Might pick up a few more on the checklists as well depending on what I can find as far as notable golf events in 1981 from players that are not otherwised pictured in the set.
I don't think I've chimed in on this thread yet but wanted to say I think this set you're putting together is incredible!!
Job well done.
Best of luck with the last 3.
Also, I don't think I've thank you yet for kicking my ass in fantasy a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for rising up out of the cellar to put a damper on
my playoff hopes.
The Couples auto you sent me a few months ago is still one of my favorites, so this is as good a place as any to thank you again.
Good luck, again, on the last three.

Any leads on the Simons card? Are there many around? Have you seen any up for auction? How much?

Doug,
I currently have no leads on a Simons. I'm sure there are some around. VitoCo sent me this link where one was being sold as part of an auction lot but the minimum bid on the set wasn't met:
Green Jacket Auctions
I know of another guy that claims to have one but I haven't seen a scan yet as he's not interested in selling it. I personally haven't seen any others, but admittedly, I haven't really been looking in earnest for one. I figure the way I'll eventually find one is a casual collector will be selling a lot of the 81 Donruss signed and won't realize that one is hard to get and will just include it in the lot at a great price. It'll just be finding it first before the other collectors see it will be the hard part.

Anyone know where to find a Jim Simons??
Ed Sneed
Have you reached out to Jim Stinson on the Jim Simons? Not sure where to find one -- but he was alive until 2005, so he shouldn't be too hard to find. His autograph is not an expensive one, although I can't speak as to the demand specifically for his autograph in this set.

Thanks, I've used Stinson before, but didn't think about asking him for Simons. I'll give it a shot.
Mike
Thanks,
