Possible group rip from BBCE: 1979 OPC Hockey? PLEASE SEE THE OFFICIAL THREAD

I am wondering if there is any interest in this box as a group rip. It's an expensive one but then so is the 1986 Fleer Basketball. There are 48 packs and we might be able to get them for 285-300 each, if Steve will even consider it. This is the "Holy-Grail" in hockey where Gretzky's rookie can be found as well as Howe and Hull's last year. He says the packs are "MINT BRICKS" so I believe pack collectors might be interested in getting a few graded. I can dip into the savings account and sign up for 3-5 packs IF there is interest AND IF Steve can work with us on it.

I'm interested.
I love me some hockey but 92% chance you WILL NOT pull a Gretzky per $300 or so per pack doesn't get me excited. And even if you did the chances are it will be so off centered the best it would grade is a 6 or 7. Might as well spend $800 and just buy a PSA 7. No gamble.
Of course that's the way I think since I have been missing on all the RIPs I have been in on.
ps. I hope school is going well for you

Lots more autos and great cards in every pack.
<< <i>how many waynes are normally in a box >>
396 cards in the set
48 packs per box
14 cards per pack
= 1.7 per box
I think the point 7 would grade poorly

"Molon Labe"
<< <i>do mint commons sell well.. like 86 fleer.. i am very very unlucky when it comes to packs... yet i have can't resist the gamble.. even though it would make more sense just to buy a psa 5 ... i think i would be in for a pack.. >>
Not enough to recoup 300 but the demand for pack-fresh '79 OPC's is high. If you look at eBay auctions you will find that 79's in lots generally have a lot of activity. Downside is that this year is prone to poor centering and the cards are sensitive. '86 Fleer was full of MAJOR basketball stars so the "commons" probably would sell out better.

Thanks, school is going well - I have been on a "mini break" the past couple days which has been nice
The last person I know to crack a box of these was in 2004 and he pulled 3 Gretzky's, one got a PSA 9 (4-5500 card) and the other two I am not sure, but if my memory serves me rigtht he said they were pretty poorly centered.
<< <i>I'd be in if the packs would grade out to an 8 or better - I would not be interested in ripping it but I'd like to add one to my pack collection. >>
Not sure, but I am sure Steve could pick out a nice one for you and the pack collectors. He has them advertised as "MINT bricks" I think this group rip would be a great opportunity to get a hold of a nice unopened pack or two.
300/pack is high, I'll admit, but look at what you're getting. It's great for the pack collectors, great for the gamblers who want the rush, and great for the hockey folks who just want to rip the greatest packs from hockey. But we will all have the confidence of quality, unsearched product from BBCE.
Looking at my finances I can absolutely commit to 4 packs. I'm not into pack collecting but would consider saving one of these just for that.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
It sure would be great if this rip could fly. I personally don't understand the great big panic if a rip doesn't sell out in a short period of time.
I'd like to see a rip of this calibre happen. Even if it takes many days or even weeks.
Let's give it a shot now, and call Steve later.
Allow people to enter the rip, and leave if they choose.
I'm in for 6 to start.
1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold Ozzie Smith
2006 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Chris Carpenter
I would be interested in about 3 packs right now. This would be a hell of a rip and a lot of fun. Keep me posted if this is a go or not.

I emailed Steve last night about and am awaiting his response on if he can do it and how much he can offer it to us for. I'll keep everyone posted as I'm excited and hoping we can get this to work!
Patrick
It looks like we have about 18-20 packs people are interested in...not bad for an "unofficial count" - I really think we can pull this off!
