Accurate and Consistent Grading is the Key

Accurate and consistent grading should be the goal of TPG's and numismatists. I applaud PCGS for providing a cash buy back grade guarantee. Personally I’ve never used it but it’s good to know it’s there. I’ve never been a fan of market grading because what is market acceptable will change over time. I’m convinced PCGS does a good job overall. What bothers me is the fact that to my knowledge PCGS has never publicly acknowledge any change in their grading standards. Let’s be honest, after grading over 18 million coins over more than two decades without some adjustment of grading standards is virtually impossible. Many would argue that the changes occur randomly without any type of pattern. Regardless I know that PCGS has learned a lot about the many nuances of grading the many different series of coins. For example; planchet quality, striking detail, luster, toning patterns, business or proof strike, etc. I believe these characteristics can significantly affect the grading of an entire series or just a single year of issue. I encourage all the TPG’s to publicly acknowledge that as they learned over the many years it made perfect sense to adjust their grading standard based on their newly acquired knowledge. Some people might ask why bother? This would validate what we already know; it would permanently eliminate the stigma that I hear so often regarding this issue. This action should help reinforce our confidence in grading companies which IMHO is absolutely critical to maintain a strong market.imageimage

I'd guess that what you and many others here refer to as inconsistent and/or tighter/looser standards is more likely a difference of opinion among/between the various graders that have seen the coins over the years.

You make a valid point. This would also explain something that has always bothered me. Some coins removed from older PCGS holders and resubmitted will no longer grade at PCGS. The human grading factor must contribute to grading uncertainty. imageimage
